Home page: create columns in content area

My site is so close to completion! As usual I have done numerous searches without successfully finding the answer to my question.

The home page is basically two columns. Navigation links on the left, and the content on right.

What I would like to do is divide THIS content column into two. Store information on the left. Featured item/s on the right.

How do I do this? Currently it has the store information on the top and featured items underneath.

Thanks for help in advance...

Re: Home page: create columns in content area

A standard zencart install has templates that comprise:

                              • HEADER - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

LEFT COLUMN --- CENTRE COLUMN --- RIGHT COLUMN

                              • FOOTER - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

As we can't see your site (no URL posted) I have to assume that you have DISABLED the right column, and that you currently see only the HEADER, the LEFT COLUMN, the CENTRE COLUMN, and the FOOTER.

If you ENABLE the RIGHT COLUMN, then activate the Featured Products sidebox, and make it the ONLY ONE that appears in the right column, you will have the effect you are seeking.

You can control the pages on which the right column appears, by editing various lines in tpl_main_page.php (which resides in the common folder of your template.)

Re: Home page: create columns in content area

Ok- got that, but because my site has been customized, when I activate the right column, it shows WAY right and not within the content area.

Is there another option?

Re: Home page: create columns in content area

I'm confident that introducing another "column" to the template structure will require that you do a major re-write of the core code.

The fundamentals of layout are governed by several settings in your admin panel, a couple of places in the core code (such as languages/english/header.php) and by the stylesheets.

My advice (if you are set on introducing a right column) is to activate it, then get it to fit by adjusting all the settings at your disposal.

As your template has been heavily customised, we can't see what (if any) back-end code has been modified. Offering further advice will be largely a "shot in the dark".

You may consider asking for support in the Commercial Help Wanted section.

Hmmm... I figured that was the case... I appreciate the time you took to look and respond.

Re: Home page: create columns in content area

you only want this for a single page or 2 - you can add 2 divs inside of the code for indexDefault I am guessing as your site is currently down for maintenance,

Float one left and one right and apply widths so that they fit and are what you want

For the main page this would be a custom tpl_main_page.php for the home page
