PayPal Pro, ALERT: PayPal Direct Payment Error (<!-- -->), COWOA

I'm having a problem using paypal pro. I have a verified paypal business account. I've tried redoing the credentials as well as uninstalling and installing the modules again as suggested in various threads.

I am using CheckOutWithOutAccount (COWOA) Mod. When I submit my payment information, I'm getting an error, with no information. Just the red bar and exclamation point. The transaction goes through on the paypal end because I receive the money, but Zen Cart stops the ordering process and never logs it.

Looking at the log files, I see:

I'm not getting any errors here that I can google for. ZenCart seems unhappy with something it's getting back ... Just not sure What. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did this fix work for you? I have the same problem! Some people are able to register without a problem. What I have noticed is that the person trys to make the purchase, but cannot. They see it still in therir shopping cart and try again. They get charged each time. I see them registered as a customer, but I do not see their order in my Zencart admin panel, but I see it in Paypal, a few difrent times, complete. I get your same error code sent to me.
ALERT: PayPal Direct Payment Error ( <!-- -->) What is this? My customers get pissed! I hope you have a fix. I spoke to my last customer. He sad that he tried to pay with American Express first, then used another card, all cards charged, but he is stilll not a registered customer! STRANGE HEEEELLLPP!!!

I spoke to Paypal, they said that there is no problem on their end and that it is not their error code. I also noticed that the guy tried to change uo his address three times, just in case, but it was not an address problem

It would be best to apply the suggested fix, as it should help even if you're not using COWOA as the person who originally started this thread was using.

I occasionally get that codeless paypal error too. Not all the time; but every few weeks or so. I read all the posts I could find about it on the forum, and have never found a clear answer as to what causes it.

My own theory is that it's caused when there are timeouts while communicating with Paypal's system. The server I was on at my old host was oversold, and had frequent slowdowns. The errors seemed to happen when my site was also loading very slowly. That's my guess anyway, although I haven't had any errors since switching to better hosting two months ago.

One thing I'd recommend is to change the Payment Action in the Paypal module from "Final Sale" to "Auth Only". It won't solve the underlying error problem, but at least you can cancel the extra charges before they're applied to your customers card.
