What exactly is the difference between Zen Cart, Oscommerce and CRE Loaded?

Same as the difference between a porterhouse steak, a hamburger patty, and an old tennis shoe.

But seriously, folks, I think that Zencart and CRE Loaded (dumbest program name ever) are both forks of osCommerce.

I'm not familiar with CRE Loaded, but I tried both osCommerce and Zen Cart and realized that Zen Cart was easier to customize and had a much friendlier, helpful community.

My 2 cents.

Zen Cart is true open source. CRE is not.

Zen Cart support is by far better then CRE.

Zen Cart is stable out of the box. CRE has to many built in mods that need work.

As I see it the CRE fork of OSC is going the same way that Squirrel Cart went commercial.

Oscommerce (OSC): Great in its time, Stale development. really hasnt went anywhere for YEARS

CRE Loaded: Sals offshoot of OSC. its OSC with a bunch of toys added. still the same stale code for the most part.

Zen Cart: a cart system in a constant state of improvement.
ZC started off in 2003 where OSC is at today.
and has constantly improved the code. ( added a template system, cleaned up the code, php5 compliant, php globals not required. the list goes on )

in closing

While its true Zen started as a fork of OSC, it has evolved into its own personality. and will continue to develop and get better and better.
