Can't add new banner ad

My site is now live as https://www.lifering.com, woohoo!

I'd like to create a sidebox banner ad to link to the home page of my parent organization, https://www.unhooked.com, using an image on that site as the link. I've turned on /modules/sideboxes/banner_box.php; I click on Add New Banner and get a fairly obvious form, which I fill out; but when I click on the Insert button, nothing happens. At one point I got something that said, "Error on page", but now I get no error message at all, except that it doesn't add the banner.

Is there some obvious known stupid thing I may be doing? I assume I should be able to create a new sidebox banner ad? Is it, f'rinstance, legal to put this string in the box labeled "Image":

http://www.unhooked.com/images/Logo060615.gif

Or do I have to download a copy of the gif and upload it?

Re: Can't add new banner ad

Try the mod "Blank Sidebox" - download here

You can use this for any banner, image, link etc etc.

Installation is straight forward.

Re: Can't add new banner ad

Well, it's a suggestion I can try if I can't get the banner to work; but now that the site is live, I'd prefer not to install any more mods unless I have to.

It seems to me that I ought to be able to add a custom banner and have it appear in

/modules/sideboxes/banner_box.php

Re: Can't add new banner ad

Actually, I've got the banner showing - I realized I had to upload the GIF instead of linking it. I've got it showing correctly (except for the color and I can fix that) in IE7, and the link works, BUT - there's no visible GIF in FireFox, and the box doesn't seem to contain the link! Whaaat?? How can this be?

Check it out at https://www.lifering.com - it's the sidebox at the top of the left column. It's currently labeled "sponsors" but I'm going to change that. How can I make this show in FireFox? Why doesn't it?

Re: Can't add new banner ad

Additional note on FireFox versus IE7 display of the banner box:

In IE7, which works, the page source shows the link like this:

<a href="http://www.lifering.com/index.php?main_page=redirect&action=banner&goto=9" target="_blank">

while the FireFox page source is different:

<a href="http://www.lifering.com/index.php?main_page=redirect&action=banner&goto=9&zenid=0ctraoek3u3qop3ihkn02l19g6" target="_blank">

I have to conclude that extra string after "goto=9" is causing my problem but it still doesn't explain why FireFox put it there.

Re: Can't add new banner ad

OK, that's a disturbing point - I'm running FF3 and it doesn't work. Now what do I do?? Tell everyone to downgrade to FF2?? Any suggestions? I realize that if it's FireFox, it's out of range for this audience...

Re: Can't add new banner ad

Never mind, I figured it out - it was AdBlock, the FireFox extension...

Very nice. Dissing people from whom you're asking for help - not the hot setup.

Re: Can't add new banner ad

I evidently didn't make myself clear. There is no reason on earth why the ZenCart support team should be expected to be responsible for the peculiarities of FireFox. I didn't wish to appear to be asking the ZenCart community for help on a program they have no reason to support, any more than if it were Microsoft... Nobody can be an expert on everything.

Re: Can't add new banner ad

Sorry - my misunderstanding ...

My limited testing with IE8 suggests that it's every bit as standards compliant as FF3, so maybe someday reasonably soon we can dispense with all this browser nonsense.

Re: Can't add new banner ad

NOTE: to prevent Ad blockers from affecting your banners, as more than you will have these, save the banner images in a different directory like:
/images/mystuff
/images/zencart

anything is fine except "trigger" words that Ad blockers look for like:
/images/ads
/images/advertisement
/images/banners

Those little nuances will help stop Ad blockers from blocking your customers from seeing them as well ...
