I Have Succeeded in Setting Up a Downloadable Product, But why must it be an attrib?

I have already set up a downloadable product successfully, but for the life of me, I don't understand why the only way to reach that field in which I specify its filename, I must add at least one attribute to the system?

Also, to me it seems that the attribute is not even related to the download feature. That is, it doesn't matter what kind of attribute I add, to be able to navigate to the product which I want to associate a download attribute with.

Can you please explain this to me?

What am I missing?

Thanks,
Daniel

You are more than welcome to reprogram the features to work however you'd like them to.

Please do not PM for support issues: a private solution doesn't benefit the community.

Be careful with unsolicited advice via email or PM - Make sure the person you are talking to is a reliable source.

Sorry for not explaining my question well. I didn't mean to criticize this excellent software, but rather understand something that as a newbie I seem to be missing.

the instructions for setting up a downloadable product say that I must first "create the attribute I want to allow a specific download, before beginning to configure my download attribute".

So my first question is: What if I don't want to associate any attribute for my product? Does it make sense at all to create a downloadable product with no attributes?

If a downloadable product with no attributes doesn't make any sense, that explains why without at least one attribute there is no way to select the product to be downloaded on the way to configuring its associate filename.

I am trying to understand the rational or meaning behind the concept of "attribute" (in the context of Zen Cart) so that I can better utilize this powerful system.

One of the things that can help me understand that is probably an explanation why a downloadable product with no attributes doesn't make sense.

I would appreciate any insight you can shed on this subject.

Thanks,
Daniel

The Download has to be attached in some manner ...

Many offer a variety of Downloads to choose from, similar to color ...

Red
Yellow
Green

English
Spanish
French

Word
Text
PDF

So attributes work easiest for this ...

Each attribute can have its own download filename attached to it ...

Thank you. I think that I finally understood the idea behind this.

Re: I Have Succeeded in Setting Up a Downloadable Product, But why must it be an attrib?

At some point, in a future release, we will be looking into attributes used for Downloads and Downloads in general to come up with a better or expanded display method for shops that cater to Downloads for better flexibility ...
