News area in Main Page

Hello all,

I'm looking for a feature in ZC which allows the administrator to easily add news items to the main page. These news items should include:

1. title
2. text/description - not the products' description
3. link to the product
4. optional picture (not necessarily the promoted product's picture)

Basically it resembles to the "Featured Items" module, but with 2 differences:

1. adding a custom description. For example a description might be "hurry up - we have only 2 pieces left from this item" :smile:

2. this will be a queue. 5 news items in total. a new news item will push out the last (5th) news item

Perhaps cloning Featured Products to its own thing would work for you ... :smile:

With Featured Products I can only mark products from the catalog I want to appear in the main page. What I described above is slightly different. For example, I will have to add an additional field to the DB (the description field) and have a new UI from the admin side to add such news items. Things I don't really know how to do :blush:

Let me rephrase my question - is there a module which allows entering news items? kind of a news ticker (without ticking :smile:). Something that allows the administrator to add ~5 news items which include [title+description+small photo+link]?

I thought that there was something for News tips in the Downloads ... you might take a peek in there ...

Or perhaps someone using a News module could post a handy link to it ... :smile:

I didn't find a "News Updates" tool in the Downloads area. The closest was the News Box Manager but I'm looking for updates in the main page.
Can you please refer me to something similar to what I'm looking for?

Another option is to write something myself yet my PHP/SQL skills might be an obstacle... The idea is to ride on the "Featured Products" module so it will have a product description specific for the use of the "News Updates" I'm writing:

1. Add a text field to the product_description table. call it news_updates_description
2. add a textarea html control to collect_info.php to enter the News update description
3. add a corresponding SQL query to insert the news update text for that featured product. [I still don't no where to write it]
4. modify featured_products_php to select the news description field and display it.

What do you think? Should I try?
