It's not about the template itself per se, it's about how you set up the cart from inside the Admin to display your products.
Example:
Jewelry (Category)
Necklaces (Sub-Category)
Silver with Amethyst (Product)
Gold with Topaz (Product)
Copper with Turquoise (Product)
Bracelets (Sub-Category)
Silver with Amethyst (Product)
Gold with Topaz (Product)
Copper with Turquoise (Product)
Rings (Sub-Category)
Silver with Amethyst (Product)
Gold with Topaz (Product)
Copper with Turquoise (Product)
Tea Service Sets (Category)
Silver (Sub Category)
Service for 2 (Product)
Service for 4 (Product)
Gold (Sub Category)
Service for 2 (Product)
Service for 4 (Product)
Porcelain (Sub Category)

And so on...
When a visitor clicks on "Jewelry", they go to the Category Listings page. On that page, they'll be presented with the subcategories of Necklaces, Bracelets & Rings.
When they click on Necklaces, they go to the Product Listings page. On that page, they'll be presented with the Silver & Amethyst necklace, the Gold & Topaz necklace, and the Copper & Turquoise necklace.
On this page, they'll see a partial description of the product, and have the choice of adding it to their cart, or clicking 'more' to see the full product description.
Clicking on either "more" or on any one of those necklaces will take them to the Product Description page, where they can see details about the product and decide whether or not to order it.
In your Admin panel, you decide how many sub-categories show on each row on the Category Listing page, and how many products show on each row on the Product Listing page. (Do this by going to the Admin Panel, clicking on Configuration, then on Maximum Values - spend a lot of time playing around in the various sections of Configuration to set up your store the way you want it).
Once they drill down to the level of Product Description, it's one item per page.
You can make your Catalog listing as organized and as elaborate as you like, or as simple as you like. You can create one single category and list all of your products within it, or do something like outlined above.
Just be aware that once you add a product to a category, you can no longer create a sub category within that category.
So the first thing to do before you add any products, is make sure you've chosen your "layout tree" or the degree to which you want to categorize your products before adding any products. It will save you from having to delete a bunch of stuff and start over.
Hope this helps :)
