Why is Shipping Method displayed for a Downloadable product?

I thought that I setup a downloadable properly... but for some reason when (test) customer clicks "go to checkout", the Shipping Method page is displayed (along with a shipping option and price). :huh:

I have setup another downloadable test product and there everything is fine. I compared the two - both their Product Description page and Attribute Controller - they seem to be identical!

And yes, both products have those options checked:

• Product is Virtual: No, Shipping Address Required

• Always Free Shipping: No, Normal Shipping Rules

• Products Quantity Box Shows: No, Do not show Quantity Box

What did I forget in setting that rogue downloadable product? Are there other mandatory parts to setting a downloadable product?

Problem solved - although I have no idea what went wrong. All I did was go into Download Manager and be shocked to discover that the rogue downloadable product was not on the list of downloadables.

Which hinted that something was misconfigured for that rogue downloadable.

So I went again to Attributes Controller and tried to re-enter all information (which I thought I had entered :frusty:). Then click the [Insert] button. This failed with a message "duplicate attribute".

So I selected the existing attribute, re-entered all information (which I thought I had entered :frusty:). Then clicked the [Update] button. This solved the problem.

I still have no clue why it didn't work first time. It works now.

This free shipping feature is driving me nuts: I have two totally identical downloadable products - except for their type:

The first one is of type "Product - Free Shipping" and, as expected, skips the Shipping Method options on checkout. So far so good.

The second one is of type "Product - General" but for the life of me, I can't seem to figure out why on checkout it presents a non-free shipping option. :frusty: It is configured EXACTLY the same as the first one (including the attribute that makes it downloadable) - except for the Product Type.

One may say: "Duh! :bangin: The answer is in front of you: don't you see that the only difference is that one is of type Free and the other isn't?"

Well, I read all the documentation that I could find, but nowhere does it say clearly what the difference is between "Product - General" and "Product - Free Shipping"...

Au Contraire - every Zen Cart documentation that I read so far let me understand that downloadable products are the same as any other products - except for the attributes. Furthermore, a downloadable product must not be configured "Free Shipping" but rather:

• Product is Virtual: No, Shipping Address Required

• Product is Always Free Shipping: No, Normal Shipping Rules

Can you please help me sort out the confusion in my head?

The only difference (functionally) is that the default setting for "Free Shipping" is on.

This was actually one of the first things I suspected, but it turns out that I really have gremlins in my head :bangin:: The problem was that I simply forgot (and later didn't pay attention to the fact) that I didn't fully configure the download attribute part (filename).

So, my earlier statement that the two products were "identical in everything, except for the type" was simply wrong.
