removing what's new box from homepage

Hi,
I'm in the early stages of configuring zen cart and I've run across a problem I can't figure out. I've included a screenshot of the homepage as it looks right now.

As you can see I've disabled "new products" in the left column but when I add a test product (with thumbnail) to one of my categories a box appears in the center of the homepage titled "new products for august" with the thumbnail image as you see in the screenshot. How do I get rid of this box? I've been spinning my wheels on this for hours.
Also, before I add a product to a category all pages link up and display properly. The various category pages simply show "there are no products to list in this category". But as soon as I add a product to a category and then click the category link I get a blank page, coupled with the 'what's new' box appearing on the hompage.

Any help would be appreciated.

Turn off the centerbox in the Admin> Configuration> Index Listing

Might want to get a copy of the E-Start book for yourself and your client.

Still having the problem with the blank category page after I add a product. Any thoughts on that?
