Aha - it did work. I had thought those settings didn't apply to the images in question since their pixel size, as displayed, did not match those numbers in that admin setting.
I doubled the numbers anyway, and the images indeed grew in size, though they still don't match the "pixel width and height" numbers in the admin - those are set to 200 x 114, but the images are 144 X 120.
Glad that I was able to address this, but what gives with the discrepancy?
Thanks,

That's because the category grid downsizes to a predetermined % width based on your category grid layout.
The grid places your products at a width of 100% across. If you have 3 products per row the grid spaces them out at 33% each so 3 products can fit into a 100% width. 4 products and all your images will be downsized to 25% each.
I'm not crazy that it automatically downsizes my larger "preview" images to the smaller size in the category listing. I'd rather be able to specify an image for each. In the downsizing photos can lose their sharpness, details and just look plain weird.
anybody know a way to specifiy a different image for the standard image preview in the product description and the enlarged preview? Would it be editing the javascript that is called?
