product Name - Can only put so much in the field

Ok, my site is ready to rock and roll, but I need to do one more thing to finish it off... Ands thats to ba able to put more charactors in the Product Name field.

Some of my products have quite long names but I can fit them in the field. Does anyone know how I can change it so I can put more in the box?

I did some searching through a ton of PHP files but cant seem to find any answers, nor in admin either :(

You need to access your database with phpMyAdmin (should be in your hosting control panel) and choose the products_description table and change the **products_name **field to a larger number of characters.

The mysql database field for the product name is limited to 64 characters.... changing this is an advanced topic...

I tried changing the fiels lenght, but as said by steve its an advanced topic. The field now reads 150, but in Zen admin it still only lets me use 64.

Steve, any chance of a quick crach course... Dont worry, im not a newbie so should be able to understand anything you throw at me ;)

Got it sorted now tho, cheers guys.

Ok. You're going to phpMyAdmin and selecting the proper database from the list on the left.

From the new list on the left (list of tables) you'll click on products_description.

You'll be presented with a list of 7 fields, one of which is products_name. The type is varchar64.

In the product_name row, click on the pencil on the right (Change on the mouseover).

In the Length/Values box, change 64 to whatever you want (actually, 128 should be plenty).

Click on Save (all the way over on the right). The type should now say varchar128, and you're good to go.

You may have to log out and log back in to Admin.

Edit: Well, if anybody else needs instructions, ...

Should work.

If you have any mods installed that deal with product names, all bets may be off.

NOTE: when changing field size, be sure you change any and all related field sizes on related tables ...

Example:
products_description has the field products_name ...
orders_products has the field products_name ...

NOTE: field names between tables, for the most part do match, however others could be similar field names and you will want to observe your tables and field names carefully ...
