Product attributes. Colour, size etc

Hi,

Im daft as a box of nuts. Could someone please explain in plin english how i add size, color or any other menu option to a product. i would also like to know if the option is available live on the site would it be added to the basket if it is selected?

say i have an apple that is small, medium or large and it is green, red or blue. how do i get all those choices in to my site for the customer to choose them and once they do choose, how is it paid for?

lets say we have already set up a page for product apple.

catalog>Option name> color of apple

give the options values. ie color choice of apple is green/red.
catalog>Option value> select color of apple> create "green" as value

now you have to "apply the above optioin" to a product via the attribute controller.

catalog>attribute controller>product "apple" > select the option "color"> add the value "green" to the option.

product apple should have the attribute of buying a green apple now. repeat steps to add more options.

i suggest getting the book. it helped me understand it. i was confused at first too.
