There was really no "This is the fix"
There were several general ideas but none of what I read was any help.
I had a good look for a solution via google and thread searching.

There is no fix but there are suggestions for some of the common causes for this error.. You will need to provide A LOT more details in order to run down why you are getting the error.. Otherwise no one can really help you.. Half of the reason why this error has no real fix is because we've not been able to replicate the issue.. So there are some USUAL causes (several actually) that have been posted.. Have you tried those suggested remedies?? You say none was of any help, and have proved no additional details on how none of these remedies applies to you..
Ok Im getting somewhere. I went back and had another look at some of the other posts and I saw-
"Putting images in the large/medium folders turns off IH for those images."
I made a new test product and added a base image, then used IH3 to add a second image. It did actually upload the image, but it put it into the /images/large/ folder. Is that normal activity? Anyway, the image doesnt display, in IH3 OR on the website.
Simply moving the image from /large to /images was enough to show the extra image in IH3 and on the website correctly.
Does that give us something to go on? I still got the error, on upload, but the image was uploaded, although perhaps into the wrong folder? Ive been playing around and I may have changed a folder permission or ownership or something for it now to be uploading, maybe I didnt look in the "large" folder before I dont know.
I really appreciate your help BTW.
Don't take this wrong, but NOPE.. that doesn't help..
Please go to the troubleshooting section of the IH3 readme or the first page of this support thread.. You need to help us help you.. So start there with the troubleshooting suggestions, and then follow the suggestions for posting the information we ask EVERYONE to post when asking for help.. Otherwise we will waste an awful lot of time GUESSING what might be wrong with your IH3 install..
OK Ive basically just redone the install. Ive double checked every single file. They are all there.
Some basics-
extension is .jpg
no spaces in name
no strange characters in the name
Folders all have 777 permissions
Manual upload with _01 to /images displays in IH3 and on the website
PHP Version 5.2.9
Image Handler3 v3.0 for v1.3.x
ZC is 1.3.9h
magiczoomplus mod
Easypopulate mod
Paramita v1.1 admin theme
Site is on a subdomain
I cant see anything else on page one that I can relate here about my problem?
Deleting the /images/large folder and uploading an additional image via IH3 will recreate that folder and upload the image into it with the _LRG extension. I take it now this is correct behavior. These images however, dont display on the website or in IH3.
**sigh**

Ok Ive always used the image system on the new product page to add the first image.
Ive just created a new product, without first adding that image from there. I then added the image via IH3 and it worked perfectly.
Now Im thinking I may be using IH3 wrong...?
Im having this issue trying to add additional images to a product. Ive used the "large" image link to do this, because I thought I was adding another large image.
EDIT!! Ive just tried using the default image option and it worked perfectly for adding a second image.
Forgive me but I thought that option surely must be for replacing the base image..
Turns out "default" also means add a new image. Is this explained in the usage file? I dont think it is?
I sort of see the logic now, default just refers to the state of the image, whether its the base image or the 10th.
So it was just the nut behind the wheel all along.
There are no instructions for adding extra images to a product though I think, that would make this sort of issue clear.
Chuckles to self. Done that myself even though I should know better. It actually is not a flaw in IH as such.
Here's the thing. In Zen Cart the 'default' image is the small image. To me that is counter-intuitive, but there you go. If no large and medium are supplied then the small image is used. But, hey, it might actually be big because it is the only image. But it is still saved in the same place as small images. If there isn't a small/default image specified then Zen Cart and Image Handler won't know what image applies to what product and won't be able to use 'large' or 'medium' versions. The 'small' image is the one that the system uses to 'identify' the other images.
As I say, this to me is counter-intuitive but it is just the way it is.
It IS adding another large image, but there has to be a "base" (AKA "default") image already there to begin with for it to work correctly. IH will create the small, medium, and large images based on this default image which is why you upload the largest image as your default. IF you want a different image for the large and medium images, then you upload these images AFTER you upload the base image. and niccol is right... this isn't IH that does this.. This is default ZEN CART image management behavior which IH does not try to modify, but it instead works WITH this default behavior..
BTW, we could have cleared this up sooner if you had posted the STEP BY STEP details of how you uploaded these images versus a summary of what you did.. Can't troubleshoot problems that we can't reproduce, and we can't reproduce issues with general high level steps.
"I uploaded a large image and got an error"
vs
"I took the following steps:
1. clicked on the new image button
2. I clicked the large image upload
3. I browsed my computer for an image and selected it
4. I clicked save
5. I got the following error..."
The second one would have allowed us to see what you see.. Make sense??
Perhaps the readme doesn't provide details on this process, but the interface does have this text:
Quote:
Default image file
A default image must be defined. The default image is assumed to be the smallest when medium or large images are entered.
In order to save time and space on our website server, we are wanting to use product images from another dedicated server. However, ZenCart doesn't take an image URL. It wants you to upload all images. Can this mod handle image URLs instead of having to upload them? If not, is there such a mod? Thanks in advance.
Here's the thing about this.. this error has been around for YEARS and it's been hard to pin down all the causes because no one ever posted enough DETAILS when getting the error to pin down ALL the reasons for it popping up.. We've always known that invalid filenames is one possible cause, but there are others.. I had a client that got this error when uploading images to ONE particular product.. No issues uploading images to any other product.. The ONLY thing that was different about this product was that there were quotes (representing inches) in the PRODUCT name.. So (for reasons that will ALWAYS escape me) I removed the quotes from the product name and no more error.. **shrugs**
Anyway, now we know ONE MORE reason when/why this issue occurs, and the readme and interface in the next version of IH3 will be enhanced to cover this a little more thoroughly..
Hi!
I am new to the world of zen-cart and I managed to get the "one-click" installation from my provider all right :)
I now installed image handler 3 but suddenly all images are gone. I tried to look through this thread but couldn't find a hint.
zen-cart 1.3.9
image handler: 3.0
site: www.scoutware.at/index.php
I tried to reload the pages in case it got mixed up via ftp but no success so far.
any help would be apreciated and sorry for the 100th time it is asked
regards
Stoffi
It is recommended you never use a automatic installer for zen cart, and yours probably messed up something in your configure.php file since you haven an extra / in your url. (http://www.scoutware.at//index.php?main_page=index&cPath=6)
You should resolve this first
@Design75: Thanks for that hint, I solved the "//" issue.
regards
Stoffi
Probably a good bet. Those of us who use it wouldn't know how to cope without it. Image manager is pretty much the only other option, and its just painfull.
Thanks. I tried installing IH3 on a test 1.5 cart other day just to see: nope.
I remember my early zencart days doing images the default way. I cannot imagine anyone not using Image Handler, especially if have lots of photos. Image Handler and Easy Populate are, imo, the two greatest mods...and perform better than the built-in counterparts in other free carts. Zencart really can be the best!
Just can't remember but IH3 once it gets done for zc1.5 is not going to be backward compatible, right?
Since we don't deal with credit card sales at all, nor checks or cash...then we may stick with 1.3.9h for quite a bit longer.
I installed IH3 few minutes ago and after minor modifications it works under 1.5. Tomorrow will test and provide for download in download section.
No plans AT ALL to make IH4 backwards compatible.. Shop owners will need to upgrade to Zen Cart v1.5 to use IH4. Only reason to consider making an add-on backwards compatible is if we were fixing bugs currently existing..
There are a few new features/improvements in IH4:
- Seriously EASY auto installer and equally easy uninstaller. (retains backups of "pre IH3" core files for easy rollback in the event of an uninstall)
- Improved language support (removed all hard-coded text and moved into proper language files)
- Enhancements to help further reduce errors from invalid file uploads
- Use IH4 Image Manager even if you choose NOT to use any of the image caching or other management features.
Given the free time being invested by ALL the volunteers involved in this upgrade effort, it is not worth making any serious effort to update IH3 to include these same features/enhancements -- even for the sake of backwards compatibility.
IH3 is stable and works for Zen Cart v1.3.9 stores.. Therefore, the enhancements in IH4 will be available only if you upgrade to Zen Cart v1.5.
Suggest waiting.. There has been an effort already underway to put together an updated Image Handler which is v1.5 compatible.. we have a new and IMPROVED version that is in the final testing stages.. (you apparently missed all the posts about this effort) The plan was (and still is) to submit the updated version this weekend.. I will probably make it available on my site while we wait for approval..
Ok, I did not want to wait a long time, I need it for a production site. In this case, wait for your version. :-)
Well we work as fast as VOLUNTEERS who receive no compensation for donating our time can work.. Plus I like to conduct a THOROUGH UA testing and to write proper user documents.
All of that takes TIME to put together.. I understand folks need THINK they need this TODAY, but the truth is that v1.3.9h is stable and safe and v1.5 upgrades don't HAVE to happen today. So a taking a little extra time to do this right in my opinion is the best way to proceed for the long term versus tossing something RUSHED over the fence to the community.
That said it sounds like you have a solution for yourself. So your upgrade effort isn't being impeded by waiting for our release to be finished. That said this is open source so there's NOTHING stopping you from submitting your version. However, since there has been an active ongoing effort to update this add-on I am glad you are choosing to wait and let us FINISH our release and get it out to the community.
Let me clarify this last part..
ryska it sounds like you have a solution for your own upgrade solution so while it's nice that you have chosen to wait for our release for your own upgrade, I was MORE concerned about you submitting your release before my team gets a chance to submit ours.
While I certainly can't stop you from sharing your update with the community, I am glad you have chosen to NOT to submit it and allow us to get our release out. I think it would have created a fair amount of confusion if our release is submitted to the community RIGHT behind your release. (which I am betting based on the included enhancements looks NOTHING like yours )
tjanks Diva, one can always count on you to give an answer. When and if we ever do upgrade to 1.5 we will most certainly use the IH4 vs another persons---only because I know the hard work put into this one with the various updates and have used it so am aware it works properly...no offense meant to anyone else.
So you apparently missed ALL of the follow-up discussion that followed ryska's post..
If ryska wants to share his version with you, you can certainly contact him about sending it to you.. and let's be CLEAR here -- he's NOT obligated to share his version with ANYONE. As you can see from previous posts, ryska has graciously agreed to not submit his update and allow us to finish our QA testing, updating the add-on documentation, and properly submit the new AND IMPROVED Image Handler 4 for Zen Cart v1.5. In doing so I believe this will minimize community confusion.
The documentation is being updated, and I am hoping we can submit it this weekend.. We appreciate the communities patience.
'It works' may not always be quite enough in this post-PCI apocalyptic world that we live in. As has been discussed in many threads on this and other forums.
Like others I got IH working on 1.5 pretty quickly. Do I want to say to tens of thousands of users that my version is secure? Do I want to provide support for all those users?
If the answer is 'not really' then I would just be releasing some un-supported bit of code. Now there is a time and place for unsupported code, but in my opinion IH isn't it.
By which I mean that I applaud all those people who work on a thoroughly tested, well constructed release of IH4 . It is a lot of work and needs to be done right.
Let me highlight this because I think it's the part of releasing add-ons into the wild that is an important consideration..
Why thank you!!
I agree and this why I am approaching the release in this manner.. It's nice to get such a compliment from someone of your caliber!!!
We really do need to make sure IH4 is as bullet proof as we can make these things.. that it works on different server configurations.. that it works with various store setups.. that it provides proper language support (something IH has NEVER done well BTW), that we address issues, etc..
We also want to make sure the documentation is updated and IMPROVED.. As good as the IH3 readme docs are, we are IMPROVING them which will improve the overall user experience using IH4.
NOT ONE BIT of this level of attention to detail happens overnight..
So I will say it again, IH3 and Zen Cart v1.3.9h is STABLE.. there is NO NEED to rush a Zen Cart v1.5 upgrade, and I won't personally be involved (or use) any add-on that was RUSHED out because of the PERCEPTION that an upgrade had to happen RIGHT NOW!!!
Adding to what Diva and the others have said....those who insist upon using their own or another's hacked up (an probably lacking in proper security) version of IH3 with ZC 1.50 will have to do a complete uninstall in order to be able to install IH4.
This is because so much will be changing in IH4 (including the file structure, the installation process, and the files themselves) that an upgrade from a hacked up IH3 installed on to ZC150 is simply not possible without royally messing up your store.
IMO, it is best to wait until IH4 for ZC150 is completed, tested, documented, stable, and released. Nobody is served when they have to double their efforts to uninstall a hack to make room for an official version.
As soon as IH4 for ZC 150 is ready, an announcement will be made on this thread. A link to the new IH4 support thread, as well as to the download section will also be posted. Suggest all who are as excited about IH4 as we are, subscribe to this thread and watch for updates :)
I know I'll get some grief over saying this, but it would have been appreciated if a notice had been posted in the Software Add-ons that IH 3 is not compatible with ZenCart 1.5. I had used this add-on for an earlier shopping cart (prior to 1.5 upgrade) and checked the add-on section to see if there was any newer version or issues with compatibility to 1.5. Seeing none, I went ahead and installed it and now it doesn't work and I'll need to back out the files.
I will be subscribing to this forum now to get notice of new update. Had no reason to before.
But the add-on is named Image Handler 3 for v1.3.x and it is stated that it is compatible with Zen Cart™ Version: v1.3.9.
Isn't that enough? :shocking:
The name of the mod in the Software Add-ons section is "Image Handler 3 for v1.3.x" which should serve as a notice that it is only good for 1.3.x versions of Zen-Cart. Additionally, under the Z.C. Version heading, it says 1.3.9h, so this would be another indication that it is not compatible with 1.5.0.
Adding to what the others have said, there is also a support thread which lists the mods which have been confirmed to work with and/or have been updated for 150 compatibility. It is the responsibility of all users to do their homework before installing any addon to their cart. A search of the forum or this thread (or even a closer look at the IH3 addon description) would have saved you the time and grief of an unnecessary install/uninstall.
Yes you certainly did get some grief now didn't you..
Adding to what everyone else has stated there's been MORE THAN ENOUGH published information, file naming, mod naming, support thread information, and general talking going on to have informed you that IH3 is NOT compatible with Zen Cart v1.5.
tsk tsk tsk.. the reason for the version numbers with the add-ons is to give you an indication as to what version of Zen Cart it works with. While some add-ons required little to no changes to be compatible, Image Handler is not the kind of add-on IMHO that you would want to assume was one of those add-ons that required no modification to be compatible.
PLUS as ScriptJunkuie pointed out, you should research and review your add-ons to ensure compatibility before upgrading. The support threads are one source, but there is an entire upgrade topic that is another good source. Bottomline is DON'T ASSUME..
Great idea..
We're on the home stretch. Readme file is being reworked and updated. Then one last pass to QA final package. This weekend is looking good for a submission to the downloads section.
Also quick note please stay tuned here for updates. We post all updates HERE. I can't respond to PMs asking for personal updates on the status.. (sorry...)
Thanks for your patience and understanding.
Did we get April Fooled? I'm just as eager as the rest of us. 2 Projects waiting for the new version...
As with anything else with best laid plans...RL takes first place and something probably went awry with testing....so Stuff4Toys,
Hang in there.

Re: Animated Gifs not working due to incorrect size
Further to my problem of an animated gif not working due to its incorrect size, this is just to let you know that I found a solution to my problem at:
http://www.ashongsoft.com/product/gif-resizer.html
The only thing the resizer did not do was preserve the transparent background, but turned it white. In my case, this does not matter as my page background is also white.
There may be other gif resizers out there that do preserve the transparency. Useful search words "animated gif resizer".
Cheers
I am happy to announce that Image Handler 4 has been submitted to the downloads section!! There will be a new support thread, and I will post an updates when IH4 is available for download and a link to the new support thread here.
Now to ANYONE who wants to post ANYTHING that sounds like "it's about time", I will respectfully ask that you HOLD THAT THOUGHT!!:shocking:
The people who participated in this development and testing did so in their own spare time and did NOT have to work on this at all!!
They are to be APPLAUDED for participating in this process.
The time it took for this release to come out is in part due to different geographical logistics, and real life priorities coming FIRST (NONE of which anyone who participated in this needs to justify or explain to anyone -- just sayin'..)..
Most of all frankly I think we all wanted to make sure that what was being submitted was a GOOD and SOLID release and not simply some knee jerk release that wasn't properly tested.
Anyway IH4 should be available for download soon.. I will not be posting a version on my site as the turnaround for add-ons has been pretty quick round these parts lately.. So just look out for an announcement here and a link to the new support thread.
BIG thanks to nigel, ScriptJunkie, niccol, and Jorg from the Zen Cart Germany team for all of your generous time in this effort!! You all rock!!!
Thank you so much for your hard work,iv been reading this thread for the past weeks waiting for it :)
Thank you very much Diva & 'Crew'! Great job! My new ZC1.5 is almost ready. Almost, since IH is a 'must have' IMHO  So I was patiently waiting for this module before I wanted to go live (my 'old' patched 1.3.8a is working fine, so no hurry for me though). Ofcourse there is more on the wishlist, but that can be done later.
Been reading this (and other) thread(s) for weeks now and getting more and more respect for all the time and effort you guys take to make this all possible in a very professional way!
So maybe it's time for all of you who eagerly awaited for this to hit the donate-button? :P
@Diva, where can I make a donation?
Again, great job! You guys rock!
Woot! I'm very excited about this!!
You guys are AWESOME!!!!!! Thank you SO much for your hard work... it is worth waiting for a good solid release =) It is MUCH appreciated!
WOOHOO
:bigups::flex::bigups:
Thank you for all your hard work!!! :jump:

I moved the file to myadmin/includes/languages/english/extra_definitions and still get the same error.

If I get it figured out, I will be glad to add my input as to how well it works. If you would rather that I wait until you get it tested and posted, that will work also.
IH3 is not compatible with Zen Cart 1.5. Period.
A read through this thread (even as recently as the last two days worth of posts), you would have seen that a new version of IH named Image Handler 4 has been completed and submitted to the downloads section of the support forum. It is expected to become available for download soon.
Once that happens, an announcement will be made here, along with a link to the new support thread.
IH4 has been completely redone for both 1.5 compatibility and easier installation and use. You are strongly advised to subscribe to this thread wait for the announcement that the new version is available.
Further posts addressed to Clyde are fruitless, as very sadly, he has passed away :( :( :(
Very sorry to hear the news.
When will IH4 be available for download
woho its up for download. i was the 9th downloader lol
http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?ma...oducts_id=2098
How to uninstall IH3 on zen cart 1.5?
Honestly, when the admins make it available is the best I can ever say.. I do not control when downloads are available.. I can only post when I upload it.. NOT when the admins will be done reviewing it (this is out of MY control..)
EDIT: It's available now: http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?ma...oducts_id=2098
Image Handler 4 is available in the downloads.. the new support thread for IH4 is here: http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=194740

No, sorry. I don't know how to write an sql file, so I can't help you there. You will need to manually remove the references to IH from your database.
- Back up your database before beginning
- Log in to your cpanel
- Go to MyPhpAdmin
- Click on the database you want to edit
- Click on "Search"
- Do a search for Image Handler and use the results to help you find the configuration rows to delete.
I am going through my debugging files and I have came across this error. Does anyone know what it means?
[16-Apr-2012 09:55:41] PHP Warning: preg_replace() [<a href='function.preg-replace'>function.preg-replace</a>]: Unknown modifier 'J' in /home/fromprop/public_html/myadmin/image_handler.php on line 595
I have tried searching on the forums but I didn't see anything to this error. I am using v1.3.9h.
Thanks in advance!
Have you modified that file in any way?
Have you tried uploading a fresh version of that file from the download package as that isn't an error i have come across and is fairly specific, (do you see other versions with different letters), and quite frankly it seems more like either a corruption error, or a botched edit of the file, especially as from memory that particular piece of code hasn't changed for a few years.
If that doesn't make a difference then
1) php and mysql versions?
2) How is it being triggered? is it when you are adding additional images or somethingelse, if so is is there some oddness in the imagenames perhaps? or the directory where the images are being uploaded to?
Nope I haven't touched that file since I installed this.
I didn't even think to re upload the file but I just tried and so far I don't see that error. But I do get this one now.

Double post
Moved my site to another server and hence a different home directory path. So many things in disarray. For image handler most of my files they are stored in bmz_cache are not loading anymore. Where can I update with the new directory path so images display for products (other than configure.php) ?
www.cvtreasures.com
gilby has answered this in your other post you started on the topic: http://www.zen-cart.com/showthread.p...-images-stored
Hey how do i restrict .bmp images could any one suggest thanks in advance :)
Hey guys!
I'm trying to use the "Image Handler 3" and also "Swap Images via MouseOver or Click" plugins.
Though they doesn't work very well with eachother.
When I Install IH3 into the database, the alt images suddenly disappear on product page. They are still in IH3 admin.
When I unstall IH3 from the database the alt images shows properly on the product page again.
The only thing i really need is the admin interface from IH3, is it possible to inactivate everything else?
Thanks alot!
Are there any other solution?
Gilby is right. Paying someone to custom code this for you really is your only option.. unless someone in the community volunteers to write and submit the code that will fulfill your specific requirements.. Image Handler is an image optimization add-on.. If all you want is a front end to upload additional images, then Image Handler is really not the add-on for you.. Perhaps you should look for add-ons which match your actual usage needs..
Good luck..
No extra coding was needed, I just found the solution for blurry images / no additional images showing.
Once Image handler is activated, go to configuration --> Images.
Set IH resize images to no
So paying a guy to fix this - not needed :)
Awesome you found a solution.. However, it would have been helpful (and you would have probably been given DIFFERENT information) if you had posted in the correct support thread for the version of Image Handler you are actually working with.. (it CLEARLY it sounds like you are using Image Handler 4, NOT Image Handler 3 as you previously reported)
This is the Image Handler 3 support thread which is only compatible with Zen Cart v1.3.9.. So when Gilby and I responded, we assumed you were posting in this thread because you had a Zen cart v1.3.9 store with Image Handler 3 installed.. (again this is based on the information you provided)
ih manager 3 in zencart 139
I installed the module and everything seemed ok ..
Then they loaded up no more 'photos

I've spent about an hour reading through this huge thread, and could not find what I was looking for, so plaese forgive me if it's already been answered.
I'm running Image Handler 2, zencart V 1.3.9e
My questions are:
1. Is there a big improvement upgrading to Image Handler 3?
2. Is there an easy way to upgrade? I installed Image Handler 2 years ago, and can't quite remember all the steps. If Image handler 3 is simply a matter of copying over the new files over the old ones, it's a no-brainer, but if there's a lot more to it, I'm not sure if it's worth the effort, as I'm not very experienced with this type of stuff, and if I screw up, it may well take me many hours to recover.
Thanks a lot!
IH3 was updated specifically to work with ZC139x - so yes, that's a huge improvement. If you want to know what other improvements were made, simply download the installation pack and read the readme file.
Regarding installation - the readme file contains complete, step-by-step instructions for upgrading from IH2 to IH3. They are written in such a way that even the most inexperienced user will be able to complete a successful upgrade as long as they follow the instructions.
I have images in my product descriptions using img src. Does this mod handle those images as well?
I tried searching this thread so forgive me if this has already been answered. I've installed (twice) to make sure all the files were copied correctly after trying to do Image Handler 2 yesterday and people told me of this newer - thanks! But I'm having the same issue; when I go to
Make sure Image Handler 3 is installed. Admin > Tools > Image Handler3 > Admin
it is not there. I had the same issue w/version 2 yesterday so I was unable to "un-install".
Does anyone know if there is a common missed step that would have it not appear in the admin - tools area?
Thanks in advanced for any assistance!

Have you made sure you uploaded all the files to the correct places?
Did you manually upload the files or use a program.
to uninstall it you don't need to really go to admin area but go to your server and manually remove ALL the files you uploaded for both IH2 and IH3, this way you know they are all gone.
Then upload each file again from the IH3 zip. It really does work almost out of the box and should show in admin IF you did not miss any admin folder files. Remember to do the 1_install files first then open the 2_install folder and upload those too.
on a side note, love your shop....really gothic cute. But I have trouble reading your text--both the purple and white with the tiled background...suggest you get a seamless tile to not distract too much, or make the one larger.
