You probably have too many products. Exclude some categories and try again, that usually fixes the timeout issue

I have around 38,000 products. One cat has around 60 subcats, with around 16,000 prods. I excluded that category and I don't have timeout issues anymore.

excluded all categories apart from 1(with 11k of items in it)
and it still failing :S
