If it was putting the original file back in place should have fixed the issue. Would it not?
Honestly no.. or logically what you are doing would have worked.. There is CLEARLY something ELSE different about your test site besides this one file.. and you can spend all day trying to figure out what it is or you can follow mine and kobra's advice and simply get your test site exactly like your live site and then move forward with the hideCategories install (sans the includes/pages/advanced_search_results/header.php.php file of course..) This really is the FASTEST way to move you forward.. If you made a backup of your test site before installing hideCategories, this process will be even FASTER..

Which was the point of the post to begin with. Trying to figure out what files affect the search feature. But sorry for all the confusion and frustration. I will just start again.

If ALL you did was to use the modified files from hideCategories, then restoring the search files back to their defaults would have righted things for you.. (that's all I had to do on my test site) This didn't work for you which tends to sound like OTHER changes were made.. and since none of use can see what those changes MIGHT be (we'd be GUESSING), the easiest thing to do is to start over by making the test site match the live site..

If your file merging program allows you to compare files directly on your webhost (Beyond Compare has this feature not sure about WinMerge) then you can compare the test and live sites to see what files are different between the two and see if you spot the issue that way..

The point is that your attempt to shortcut the process of figuring out why your live and test sites don't behave the same is taking longer than it would have to simply just get the test site and the live site on equal footing and then start over.. Seriously it's what I would have done or I wouldn't have suggested it..

So the file that was breaking the search engine was located at
    includes/templates/your_template/templates/tpl_advanced_search_default.php

The one I kept being told was the problem was
    includes/modules/pages/advanced_search_result/header_php.php
