    red flag

Agreed... to manually resize with infranviw or I like Fotosizer is a better solution because then you can catalog your files before upload and not waste as much time uploading a huge image just to have the server convert it down... but beasley is right and it's the same reason I have asked about this many times. Some people just aren't that savy but can use Zen quite well. To them it's more difficult to resize and then upload those.

Now, I am on the same page as you guys with all this but from a technical standpoint IH2 should be able to handle very large images and resize them easily since it uses the php module imagemagick to do the resizing. Imagemagick is VERY powerful and reizing is just one of it's abilities (see php man page here: http://us3.php.net/manual/en/book.imagick.php). So I am wondering if someone who is familiar wth IH2's coding could tell us what EXACTLY it's limitiations are so we can know and then even maybe build it to be better?

OK. This is new to me. I have used IH happily on a couple of sites but today I ran into a problem that sounds like yours. Just to clarify - what you are saying on large file sizes image handler fails. Symptoms might be freezing on large images and then not displaying product listing or product info. Does this sound about right?

I was going to give it another go tomorrow but may settle for resizing manually with irfanview if there is an issue with image handler.

It's not really an 'issue', more of a limitation.

A site without IH2 is like a day without sunshine :)

    Well,

To clarify my experience was not the size of the data but the size of the image. ( The image dimensions )

Since you haven't said, I'm guessing you changed the
    admin -> configuration -> images

    IH large image maximum width
    IH large image maximum height

to match the height and width of your image (2048 X 3072)

Those settings would have absolutely no effect on wether or not IH2 breaks. That setting is just for how big your image would be allowed to become if the customer clicked on "enlarge image".

If your uploaded image was 1500px X 1500px and you had "IH large image maximum width" and "IH large image maximum height" set at 1000px your "enlarge image" would be 1000px X 1000px.

    In the configuration under images

    IH large image maximum width
Specify a maximum width for your large images. If width and height are empty or set to 0, no resizing of large images is done.

I cranked down the image dimensions with irfranview bit by bit until everything started working again.

    I went from a height and width of 2048 X 3072 down to 1900 X 2850 and volia.

And I also know for sure it's the overall image dimensions causing the conflict and not the image size because the image size went from the origional 980kb to "2.84MB".

Irfranview actually made the image size bigger by making the image dimensions smaller.
