You can turn them off until you have products

To turn off a category, go to admin>catalog>categories/products

You'll see a green button under status. If you click that, it'll turn red and the category will be hidden until you're ready for it.

But I will never have products in that section. It's a list of the services we provide.

Why create a category with nothing in it?

Maybe create a category "Services" and insert your services classes/products into that

ok..the thing is....people need to call us for our services. We do molding for plastics. Each customer will have a different price so they can't order on a website. I just want to list all the services we do and not have that "There are no products to list in this category." at the bottom of the page. I've seen other zencarts that don't even sell products without that on there so I know there must be a way.

As Kuroi said, create a category "Services" and put those products in there. You can create the products as "call for price", so no price will be displayed.

You can also create the services as "document-general" product type, which is intended for displaying information rather than selling an item.

If you want your individual services to show in the categories menu, make a category for each and put a single product with the same name in it.
In admin > Configuration > Layout Settings, set
Skip 1-prod categories
to true.

OK...So why do you have a category with nothing in it?

Do as I suggested and create a category "Our Services" or what ever you want to name it and then add your services/products to it

If you have nothing that can be purchased on line then this is more of a "Showcase" site and you can set this in your admin

admin > config > my store > store status ? select from the options

I guess I'll do that..but what if I wanna make an About Us section? That no product thing will still be there.

You would not use a category or product for an About Us page. Use ez-pages (Tools > EZ-Pages) to enter that info.

It`s easy

Do a search in the Tools-Developers Tool Kit

Look-up CONSTANT or Language File defines :Enter:There are no products to list in this category.

The search will send you to a file index.php, html/includes/languages/english/index.php

1)Download that file via FTP Client
2) Edit Index.php using a html editor. I preffer DW
3) Look for line define('TEXT_NO_PRODUCTS', ' There are no products to list in this category.
Delete The Text
Save the file
Replace the old index.php using ftp client:clap:

DO NOT replace /includes/languages/english/index.php - save/upload your customized copy to /includes/languages/english/your_template/index.php.

And if you already have a /your_template/ copy with custom content as you should, you will see that in the search as well. Download, modify and replace that copy.

Any of the original files you modify will be replaced in an upgrade and all of your customizations will be wiped out. The template override system gives a place to save your versions of files so they are safe when upgrading. See the tutorials for info on the template/override system.

yes but you re modifying only 1 line on the index.php...the rest of the content remains untouched :P

Whether you are changing one line or a hundred, the changes will still be lost with an upgrade/update. You should NOT modify the files that come with Zen Cart. You should follow the template/override system which will save you a lot of work in the long run.

Yes, it'll work but it's the wrong way to do it. You're much better off doing things the right way around.

Besides, it would be better to create the products the right way even if they're not being sold directly in the Zen Cart and not limiting the way Zen Cart works.
