Error: Catalog images directory is not writeable

Hi there

This morning, when I logged in into admin, I got this message on the to of the page:

**Error: Catalog images directory is not writeable: /home/virtual/site50/fst/var/www/html/images/
**

Any idea what that supposed to mean? Thanks

What are the permissions on your /images directory?

Hi Kobra. Its 755. This message only appears when I open Categories/Products under Catalog

755 is writeable - - are you certain that this is the directory that your install is looking at??

Yes, I am sure.

Everything seems to work fine, images in online catalog work fine as well. But I have just reminded myself that I had a similiar problem yesterday but slightly differen. When I opened shops front page I got this message:

Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file: ==================== This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file (read-only, CHMOD 644 or 444 are typical).

So I did. Is it connected? Todays problem with yesterdays? Or is it totally something else?

What is in both your configure.php files for

 define('DIR_WS_IMAGES',

This is from configure.php file from /var/www/html/includes directory:

define('DIR_WS_IMAGES', 'images/');

and from /var/www/html/admin/includes location:

define('DIR_WS_IMAGES', 'images/');

And they both have 755 permission set

I am at a loss as to why you are seeing this message???

The file from the first location is missing DIR_FS_CATALOG_IMAGES.

hmm, it says catalog images in this warning...is this the problem?

I did change permission for images folder on /var/www/html/images/ location to 777 and this warning message is gone. Is it safe to have set to 777?

It didn't solve the problem. The warning message was gone, but I couldn't delete product image, so I had put it back to 755.

I have no idea whats happening, as everything looks ok. Any idea, help much appreciated

Use FTP and transfer a non-existing folder to your server

I am able to delete and upload new images.

Wrong. I can't delete images when I tried to delete different sizes seperately ie default size, medium size, large size. After I hit the button there is a new warning message on the top of the page: Unable to delete image (or something like that). I can only delete all of them at the same time from Select Action box.

USE your FTP to remove images
As the extra med & lrg imahes have to be uploaded with FTP anyway

I just looked at the product entry screen and do not see any delete image and definately none for the med & lrg images

It does state

Delete Image? NOTE: Removes Image from Product, Image is NOT removed from server:

Where are you seeing this option?
