Image Scaling

niccol:

But I know that that is the IH way so perhaps it is a good thing to do just for compatibility's sake as people are so used to it.It's not an IH3 way, it's Zen Cart default behavior as Glenn pointed out.. IH3 simply works within those default Zen Cart parameters..

Re: Image Scaling

niccol:

The scaling is always done proportionally. By which I mean that the aspect ratio of the image remains the same. I just can't see the point of squishing or stretching an image into a space and distorting the image to do so. The scaling basically 'fits it into a box' so if the target sizes are 300 by 300 the resulting image will fit in that box. It might be 300 wide . It may be 300 high. But neither dimension will be larger that 300. (I know you personally understand this but just adding info to the thread)So happy to hear this.. Now if there is one feature in Image Manager I do not like, it's the fact that it supports these kinds of distorted image resizing options.. It's a bad practice/poor image management, and IMHO it generates less than professional looking images.. I had a discussion with someone two years ago who wanted me to add a similar feature to IH3, and I balked at the idea.. So it's good to know you are doing this in the manner you are doing it..

Re: Image Scaling

Version 0.4:

Changes:

  • image dimensions set to 0 in admin are ignored. in other words only the other dimension is used for scaling. (thanks to Diva and Glenn for pointing me in the right direction)
  • images are categorised in directories. basically the first character of the name is used to create a new directory. directories are _a to _z and _0 to _9 all other characters are put in __. So, you can still find the images easily but the directories are smaller. (thanks to Nigel for pointing me in the right direction)
  • category/product list defaults to the first category rather than all products ( thanks to Bryan for helping with testing and letting me see this)

Thanks guys :-)

Re: Image Scaling

Question Niccol.. Any chance that you will make the compression settings an admin configurable option??

Re: Image Scaling

Nice changes.. Perfectly supports my image settings with the width set to "null". NOW I see the scaled images!!!

Image Scaler apparently does NOT work on GIF images.. Is this intentional??

Re: Image Scaling

ok, for install i just uploaded the files and didnt uninstall the previous version,

got the message database changes made when in admin,

browsed site and checked scaled folder and additional folders all created fine and images in correct folders

only 1 issue is

category/product list defaults to the first category rather than all products

it defaults to first category in drop down box but still calls all the products in right hand part of screen on first load, once you select a category it does its job but on first load it doesnt,

everything seems to be working fine, set cleanup to .01 and it cleared old images

added a gif as my images are all jpg and if using the image scaler it converts to jpg on upload, created one normally and gif displays ok in catalog but hasnt been scaled

thanks
bryan

login is the same if you want to take a look

thanks

Re: Image Scaling

On the to do list

  1. try and remember to attach attachments

  2. add gif support. it is only not there because, well I don't like gifs and I forgot to put it back in.

  3. sort out the category issue mentioned by Bryan. Oooops.

  4. add compression settings to admin

  5. change the wording on that 'upload additional image' button.

  6. generally tidy up the presentation

  7. tidy up the code.

Anything else?

Thanks again guys.

Re: Image Scaling

not a biggie but search by product model to go quickly to product

delete all scaled images would be handy for me and maybe even create all scaled images

Re: Image Scaling

Well, neither image scaler or IH do this. We are talking about another mod which I am calling upload modifier that limits the upload size ( an adds watermarking, sharpness and renames) - so basically ensures that all large images are constant. The problem that you have is that some of your large images , like the helmets, are quite small relatively so ....

The other way if you are using image scaler ( or I guess IH ) is to change the code where the large image is called so that a, quite large, scaled version is used instead of the large version.

I think that you use a lightbox mod in your site. So it would need to work with that. And it would probably need to integrate with the preload feature that I talked about earlier.

Image Handler does indeed allow you to specify the max dimensions of the large image.. (It's the large image settings that IH3 adds to the configuration images settings..)

Re: Image Scaling

Hmm, something to look at. It doesn't look to hard to implement in general.

Still, like the concept of scaling them on upload better. That way you are not storing huge images on the server that are never used.

I could easily code it so that if a large version was requested it served a version that was limited to max dimensions that were specified in admin.

That is probably the way to go, right? Even if it means saving an additional big version of the image on the server.

Re: Image Scaling

yes my images do need a good sorting out, as i get new images i upload them so thats why i wanted the delete all scaled images, imagehandler has a maximum large size image which lets you set the max large image size so if one supplier gives you images 1000 wide and next gives you 700 you can set a size for them all to display but easily resized before upload

thanks

Re: Image Scaling

sorry i was typing and didnt see you had replied, the resize on upload would be good idea saving space etc but for someone like me who use easy populate and ftp images it means images are just size they come form supplier,

if max size isnt too hard to add it would be nice feature, obviously if image is smaller than max it wont get increased in size loosing quality
