If you look in the /logs directory, do you have any debug logs when an order is attempted?

This "sudden" problem sounds more likely to be something amuck with your hosting company than with Zen Cart. What are THEY telling you?
Have you done a thorough inspection of everything in your site until you've completely satisfied yourself that nothing's amiss with the files and data on your server? akin to: http://www.zen-cart.com/wiki/index.php/Recovering_From_Hacks

The last debug log is from July 2014. The website is 13mo ons.com. I will try the tests in the post you linked too.

Your hosting company's server has a Name Resolution problem, which the server administrator needs to fix.

Just had a customer discover UPS is not working in his cart for a UK based site. Any more information on this?

The normal one - from plugins. This site has been using it since right all along. Note - it is a UK site. No one else has noticed any problems.

Ha, I just figured it out. They weren't actually using the UPS module but the free shipping no longer works because - wait for it - the server is now running php 5.4 and this is a 1.3.9 cart. So thanks, ajeh, for responding so quickly. You have nothing to worry about!
