Help Please Ladies and Gents ... I think I broke it !!!!

Ok .. this is a long story but I will try to keep it brief.

I have an old zencart install 1.3.8a. We have just needed to change servers and this new one uses PHP 5.4. When my hosting company migrated the site, I couldn't get into admin although the site was still live ... saying the Database was out of date and needed upgrading.

I googled this and there was some guy on youtube with a video method. Me being thick ... I thought "ok .. lets have a look"

So .. basically what he did was used PHP my admin to download the original database .. logically and then back up the site files via FTP into a directory on his hard drive. I HAVE done this .. so I hope things are not entirely lost.

THEN .. he uploaded the latest zc_install to the server via FTP and ran it .... Great so far :P ... and hey presto .. like magic he updated the database and refreshed and it all worked. MINE on the other hand gives me this message after database upgrade

"The requested URL /home/public_html/wallart-studios.com/admin/alert_page.php was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

Now ... I know you are going to call me a noob or some kind of idiot .... but according to the actual directory structure ... the alert page.php file does actually exist. Meanwhile .. on the actual homepage of the site .. it tells me that the site is down for maintenance and I can't get into admin to make the site live again

Please can someone tell me .. in simpleton terms what I need to do here. Because I am facing a bare install of zencart and losing over 500 products of stock that will need relisting .. a complete loss of Google relevence that has taken 5 yrs to build ... and a loss of my whole registered customer database to date :censored:

All help gratefully received and I await your responses.

Kind Regards

Re: Help Please Ladies and Gents ... I think I broke it !!!!

Hi

You didn't mention if he had you modify your configure.sys files?

There are two of them, one in /includes and the other in admin/includes.

You will need to edit them and update your URLs, the paths to your files and info about the database. Once those have the correct paths, you should be able to get into your admin. Then you can see if there are other problems.

Let me know if you need more details.

Re: Help Please Ladies and Gents ... I think I broke it !!!!

Minor correction, this is not the old dos days. The files are called configure.php located as suggested includes/configure.php and YOUUR_SECRET_ADMIN/includes/configure.php.

If you had a barebones store you're almost there.

As for the configure.php files, they also have changed since ZC 1.3.8 so there may be some things missing from them that need to be present. If you could post at least your store side version without showing us you database password, etc... Then more direct help can be given which also would help get you back into your admin.

Post code between CODE tags (press the # button in the menubar)

Re: Help Please Ladies and Gents ... I think I broke it !!!!

So, difficult to clearly state what can/needs to be done at this point. It sounds like an attempt has been made to upgrade the live database to the newest ZC version without doing all these operations independent of the live site. Reason I state this is that when the zc_install is run while associated with the database, the store is placed in maintenance mode so that no other actions can be taken on the store that would/could be lost during the update period.

I hesitate providing direction on how to put the store back online for fear that now that the database has been upgraded (of course if you have the backup you could restore it and that would place the store back online assuming it was online at the time of the backup) and from the sound of it it appears that the files are still the old version which if the data is updated but the files are not, then access/modification of the data could result in errors/problems.

The other thing would be to look in either/both the logs directory or the cache directory for myDebugxxx files, as there might be something specific to this "event".

Man, I'm really struggling here to offer assistance without much/any information, it is great though that you have a backup of your database as that is effectively your store (contents of it anyways)... Maybe you can get the files squared away and then the database can follow...

Re: Help Please Ladies and Gents ... I think I broke it !!!!

What no one has said is that zc 1.3.8 does not play nice with php 5.4. The better option is to install a new zc 1.5.4 then import your zc 1.3.8 database. All is not lost.

Re: Help Please Ladies and Gents ... I think I broke it !!!!

Many thanks for your replies so far ladies and gents.

mc 12345678 ... you are correct in your assumption that I have indeed tried to update a live database. But stupidly .. as I saw on the youtube video I mentioned .. thats what he did, so naturally assumed it would be safe. I'm not quite sure what you mean by store side version ? ... If I knew exactly what that meant .. i could provide the info for you without issue.

Iruskauff .. I had a couple of error messages asking me to change file permissions of configure.php .. which I set to 777 permissions .. but wrote nothing to the files myself.

The admin side of the site was basically broke during migration to CPanel from another server .. I was informed it is because the 1.3.8 is too legacy for the PHP version that is on the server. I have another 2 zencart sites ... one at 1.5.1 and another newer one 1.5.4 and both admins are running fine now.

Re: Help Please Ladies and Gents ... I think I broke it !!!!

So .. is the suggestion swaying towards installing 1.5.4 as a new install and import the 1.3.8 database into it ? .. or do you think that the later database will correct the issue using the original 1.3.8 a ? .. I get entirely that there will be differing core files .. but being the noob I am .. zc_install had the options to update the database without warnings stating core files needed changing also :dontgetit

The store side version is the one in includes. The admin version is the other one (/admin/includes). If you post them, without your secret stuff, he can tell if they are the old configure files or the newer ones.

Iruskauff .. I had a couple of error messages asking me to change file permissions of configure.php .. which I set to 777 permissions .. but wrote nothing to the files myself.
If your host moved them for you, they prob set up the same structure on the new server so you might have been ok not editing them. I'm just curious if they kept the 1.3.8 or upgraded you to 1.5.4? So what exactly did the host do during migration? Did you ask them? Did they just move the files as they were?

Like MC123456 said, I'm glad that you have a backup of the database so you are good.

Also, what exactly happens when you try to get into your admin?

BTW, I had no idea what a noob was, lol. I sure hope I'm a Newb and not a Noob.

Yes, though I wonder if your understanding of "importing" the old database is the same as mine. Import of the older database needs to be made into a blank database (database tables dropped). Uploading of the zc_install folder for the version of zc being installed then accessing that zc_install folder should allow a database only upgrade.

Now the fact that the there was a notification of the need to update the core files means that the database has supposedly been upgraded.

Technically at least in part, if you have/keep a copy of your current includes/configure.php and admin/includes/configure.php (of course a copy of your site as well) then you could replace all of the current files with the current zc version and the site would be "minimally" functional.

I've never tried the update of the database before the files, but I guess it makes sense as a possibility...

Many thanks for your continued interest here Ladies and Gents .. it is a tiny bit of stress relief I guess

I will try and keep up and please don't think me ignorant if I don't answer your points personally .. but i will do my best.

Firstly .. the noob vs newb  .. I guess its one of those things ... in the U.K that is how we interpret the newb term ... yes .. not nice is it ?

So .. the store side version is the admin and normal configure.php ? I will post them here ...

I have now admin/admin ... YOUR_ADMIN_FOLDER .... 1zc_install etc etc. When they migrated me over ... every zencart install (3 including the one I'm having issues with) was live but I was getting the zencart setup screen every time I tried to go into the backends. After 3 days .. they managed to sort the issue out ... but just left the database out of date issue to me. They migrated the 1.3.8 without any updates whatsoever as far as I know. Finally mc12345678 ... ( I hope thats everyone answered) ... I'm afraid as I have never updated zencart before ... I didn't make a new database ... I used the database upgrade utility and it had every checkbox from 1.3.8 to 1.5.4 automatically checked .. so I just clicked "update" and let it do it's thing

The easiest way for you to see what is happening is go to https://www.wallart-studios.com/admin ... that is the site that is down at the moment :(

First of all.. NEVER post the actual path to your admin directory (done in the post before this). Now it needs to be modified and the admin/includes/configure.php file updated (and if added to support other programs any reference to it in the .htaccess in the root of the store)

I used the database upgrade utility and it had every checkbox from 1.3.8 to 1.5.4 automatically checked .. so I just clicked "update" and let it do it's thing  As to the issue of not being able to access the admin. If the above replacements in the admin/includes/configure.php file were correctly performed (even though information was obscured in some areas that appear unnecessary), then the following is/was incorrect: ``` define('DIR_WS_ADMIN', '/home/ ............'); ``` This define should simply point to the subdirectory off of the store's main page, like if your site is www . mydomain . com, and the admin folder were my_secret_admin then the above should be: ``` define('DIR_WS_ADMIN', '/my_secret_admin/'); ``` The substitution done: ``` define('HTTP_SERVER', ' ........'); define('HTTPS_SERVER', ' .........'); define('HTTP_CATALOG_SERVER', ' ..........'); define('HTTPS_CATALOG_SERVER', ' ............'); ``` Seems unnecessary as the values for HTTP_CATALOG_SERVER and HTTPS_CATALOG_SERVER should be the same here as they were for HTTP_SERVER and HTTPS_SERVER in the includes/configure.php file... If they are different, then there is yet another issue. Seeing that the database has been upgraded but the files have not I would not suggest enabling the cart at this time without the equivalent file version to access the database, it would be my suggestion to install/upload ZC 1.5.4 files to a suitable location on the server, the database information of that install to reference your current database and from there you should be able to access your admin side. Currently and as a result of the database upgrade, there are aspects of the admin users data table that have changed and are not accessible by the old files... Therefore would not be able to use the old files (at or before 1.3.9) to access the admin side of the store. Generally speaking if push comes to shove, the current configure.php files (includes and admin/includes) could be a starting point for the new files in this new directory... So, could copy them to say your local computer (ftp), then clear the contents of the subfolder (not your live regular running location), upload the files for ZC 1.5.4 (available from <https://www.zen-cart.com/getit>) upload the includes and admin/includes configure.php files to their respective location, and then would be able to access the admin side of the store for that new install... Your template/look will not be present and it will look a little off as a result of those files not being present (database will be trying to access the template as the active template) but it would be a start at least for the new version. Then can address template install/upgrade/copy over however it is desired to get back to business... Much more to do also, but step at a time. :)

Re: Help Please Ladies and Gents ... I think I broke it !!!!

mc12345678 ... You sir or Lady are a DIAMOND :D :D :D .... I HAVE ADMIN !!!!!

I did as you suggested in regards .....

As to the issue of not being able to access the admin. If the above replacements in the admin/includes/configure.php file were correctly performed (even though information was obscured in some areas that appear unnecessary), then the following is/was incorrect:

Code:
define('DIR_WS_ADMIN', '/home/ ............');
This define should simply point to the subdirectory off of the store's main page, like if your site is www . mydomain . com, and the admin folder were my_secret_admin then the above should be:
Code:
define('DIR_WS_ADMIN', '/my_secret_admin/');

That cured the no admin backend and at least I can access what is there for now. I think now it's time to just dump 1.3.8 and move on with doing the job right and redoing the site with 5.4 from scratch. I'm guessing that from the weird directories that have appeared during migration... the whole code needs tidying up anyway. I think 1.3.8 a has run it's course and I have had a good run of 5 years .. so I can't complain

Re: Help Please Ladies and Gents ... I think I broke it !!!!

I would like to add .. that the version showing on the admin is now 1.5.4 ... so I guess the database did actually update to a degree. Is it safe to take the site off of maintenence mode for now in your opinion ?

Re: Help Please Ladies and Gents ... I think I broke it !!!!

Well, ctually what I would suggest is to do a bit of an inspection. So, top right says current version is 1.5.4, correct? And when the version link is clicked, in the upper area it shows your updaate has been performed on the database from 1.3.8 all the way to 1.5.4 at all about the same time.

You have a new menu option related to admin on the far right?
In the configuration ->maintenance mode, enter up address so that you (and basically you alone have access to the store front.) Run it through it's paces and see what still needs to be done to support further operaton. Ie. Payment, shpping, products, etc...

May still need to modify the template files to bring them up to ZC 1.5.4 or as suggested elsewhere identify a new template that is perhaps more mobile friendly...

Whle it is important to be online, I would think it is also important for sales to be possible, even if there are a few "issues"...

Re: Help Please Ladies and Gents ... I think I broke it !!!!

Hi again mc12345678 .... you are correct in all assumptions. There is indeed a new menu option called "admin access management". The template that is being currently used seems to be operational without issues and checkout seems exactly as it was before disaster struck.

Payment and shipping modules are the same as before also and going through checkout is the last thing to do. Regarding Template updates to something more mobile friendly ... this is again ... wise advice for which I thank you. But would a 1.5 template be ok to install ? .. (bearing in mind that the site is still using 1.3.8a core files and only database has been upgraded)
