In July of 1977, after New York City had a massive blackout, a representative for San Antonio's City Public Service declared, "The chances of San Antonio having an eathquake are greater than the chance the city will have a blackout similar to the one in New York." Just three months later, a diesel technician was working on a backup diesel generator and left for the day without reconnecting it to the grid. That evening, one generator failed and switched automatically to the backup which was not connected. The resultant blackout was larger than the state of Rhode Island.
In 2014 both Microsoft and Google were down. Microsoft for 9 hours. You KNOW they had enough backups and personnel on hand. Google's problem was software, not hardware. Ellen DeGeneres caused a 15 minute outage of Twitter simply because 1.3 million people re-tweeted her Oscar selfie.
Yes, it's frustrating when things go bonkers and we can't fix it or contact the person working on the problem. On top of that, we're a society that stands in front of a microwave and hollers, "Hurry Up!"
The person you want to contact is generally busy trying to fix the problem.
But, there are things you can do. A good explanation and possible solutions can be found at http://tinyurl.com/gsj8f67.
Over ten years of interaction with Tony here on the forum assure me that he is doing all he can since the "fit hit the shan."
