Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

When lookinhg for a new host you want to look for the following in order

  1. Features you require
  2. Speed
  3. Customer Service response time and helpfullness in resolving issues
  4. Features you dont need but would like (eg. Lots of space)

Good luck in webhost searching :)

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

I have always loved the 50 GB and 1 TB of bandwidth for 3.99 a month

its All marketing, everyone thinks that they have to have the bigest

If a server has 1.3 TB monthly bandwidth and they sell this 3.99 package 400 times

Yes thats about the average number of accounts on a typical cheap host per server.

well its simple do the math

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

I've got my site up and ready to launch on dreamhost, but yet, it IS slow. Even with all suggested optimizations from the FAQ in place. Much slower than my unpotimized oscommerce installation was. Why would zc be so much slower than osc? I thought they used essentially the same engine.

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

Zen Cart does a zillion and one things more than osC ... the two could not possibly be compared as they are like comparing apples and oranges ...

However, on a decent server, Zen Cart can do all of those things without an appreciable slow down ...

The v1.3.x series is designed to speed up Zen Cart even more in regard to all of these features while still providing even more ...

It all depends on your site ...

Unless you are getting into 50-80 attributes per product or 2000 Categories or 50,000 products ... you usually should not see a major speed issue on low end servers ...

When you get into these higher numbers ... then you should be looking for servers that are optimized for MySQL and php ... and for hosting sites that understand the needs of e-commerce sites ...

If you are going to run a business ... don't rent a storage unit ... get a decent office ...

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

Didn't mean to impugn zencart in any way, just thought it was supposed to be very similar to oscommerce "under the hood". Guess there's more to it than that.

Major kudos to the zencart team are in order. In just a few days I have managed to set up a zencart store that is orders of magnitude better than the old oscommerce system that I was patching and struggling with for almost a year. This DESPITE getting started right when the whole support forum went down. There'll be a nice contribution to the dev team coffee fund when the site goes operational, and more to come as business grows.

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

Ahh, so this is why my site is sooooo ssssslllooooowwwww.

Damn, dreamhost used to be pretty good. I really hate the idea of switching.. Heck I think I still have 2 years on our contract. I'll yell at them a bit and see if I can get anything more then a sore throat.

-Waynewell, get out your lozenges - i wasted my time with them. i've switched and never looked back. freaking bunch of clowns, imo. they offer nothing but excuses.

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

my site is slower than a seven year itch. is it really dreamhost?

i have the same problem that everyone else here has and today dreamhost told me that it is the way zen cart handles the queries.

i had faith in dream host. i have been with them for five years.

it seems to me if it is zen cart, why is my site way slower than any other zen cart site on the planet? if it really is zen cart, wouldn't all of the sites be slow?

they also told me to hire a dba. what is the point of the one-click install if i now need a priceless dba? anyone?

does anyone have any advice for moving to a new host? will i have to reconfigure my ssl and linkpoint?

does anyone have any advice on pinpointing the problem with the slowness?

DH is good if you're an amateur web designer doing personal sites. I've had with 5 web hosts in my years - and honestly, you get what you pay for.

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

I think this quote sums up the problem we Zenners have with Dreamhost:

Customers are unable to host forums or blogs due to CPU utilization limitations
A frequent complaint from customers is that they're unable to host their blogs or forums with DreamHost because of CPU utilization limitations. This is especially true with WordPress blog software and phpBB forum software.

Funny thing is they recently removed the CPU usage limit, but they just make sure it is good and slow. We just use too much CPU to fit their business plan, so us leaving is fine.

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

I am pulling my account today.

DH has had running issues with both email blocking and email service since April. Actually the situation goes so far as to have customer service challenge me as to if I was lying about my outgoing emails. My situation was that my outgoing mail was not landing with any of my recipients, nor was I receiving a bounce. This was occurring intermittently since April. As of yesterday they acknowledged the there was a policy level server error.

Additionally I am having HUGE e-commerce problems as everything runs tremendously slow in that area.

I would have to say that the biggest issue is the AOL and Spamcop blocking on an almost daily basis. Those 2 items kill 60% of my outgoing BUSINESS emails.

I have tried reaching Josh Jones, CEO to discuss the matter but they have him fairly well firewalled off from the public. I am thinking CERTIFIED, RESTRICTED DELIVERY. I want him to know why I and my clients left.

Strictly Business plan = strictly a pain in the neck.....

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

We have not had any trouble with the email on our account. We do have customers on AOL. But I have seen them post information about the problems.

I'm pretty sure we will be jumping sites soon also. Don't really look forward to it. Guess we will see how good my skills are with the database, etc. Yikes!
