rotozuk:

Then you can forward the PMs to me.. :)

I dumped dreamhost for one of the certified ones and they moved the whole site over for me. Nice job!

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

I'm on dreamhost now and not having too much of a problem with it yet. I was on servage and zencart was dog slow until I changed a few of the settings (it was still slow, just not annoyingly slow, except for the annoying FTP speeds which always are slow on servage).

My suggestions
StoreSessions should be empty, using db is slow.
No SQL cache method = none or file, using database is slow (and obviously hammers the database)

Zencart is just pretty slow in general, with 1800+ individual php files and 10 levels of template overrides.

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

/me peeks at her client's parse times for 300 Categories, 4000 Products, and 40,000 attributes ...

Parse Time: 0.766 - Number of Queries: 1812 - Query Time: 0.478999974365

Parse Time: 0.315 - Number of Queries: 690 - Query Time: 0.127499948959

I so hate when they get over 0.5 seconds ...

All depends on the hosting site and the server configuration ...

Cannot wait until we get the next release or so out and these are more optimized ...

ok, what did i do now? i was changing the config files just as you said to speed things up.

i moved my site yesterday to a new host. i went to make the changes you recommend above, first i downloaded both configure.php from my new server, made the changes then uploaded only the admin/includes/configure.php - i got an error so i reverted back to the original configure.php in the admin. still getting the error. oh, god.

i suspected that i overwrote the admin configure with the wrong configure file. i checked and as far as i can tell it is the proper file.

this is the error:
Warning: main(includes/configure.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/public_html/store/includes/application_top.php on line 53

Warning: main(): Failed opening 'includes/configure.php' for inclusion (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/public_html/store/includes/application_top.php on line 53

the only other thing i have done with the site is change
the dns about an hour ago. could that have anything to do with it?

can anyone help? thanks

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

the DNS changes can take anywhere from an hour to 2 days to propagate around the world.

When you login to the admin, it goes to domainname.com/admin etc etc. You provably won't be able to access your admin until your domain name is pointing to the new server.

RE: http://207.44.220.204/store/index.php and site explosion

don't panic zen cart people. it's all fixed now due to an excellent customer service angel. shweet.

p.s. not to give nightmarehost a bad name or anything, but i jumped off of that alleged sinking ship yesterday. it was easy, fast, inexpensive, and pleasant.

thank you for all of your help and good advice -

and good luck in all of your endeavors,
darrian

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

I've had dreamhost for over a year and a half and they've been great!

Well, until I recomended them to my office and we swtiched to them. We have had two major outages in the first three monthes and one email outage. I know stuff happens, but I think they are growing quicker than they can keep up. I am gonna give them another chance and see what happens.

The funny thing is that my long standing account: www.divineapparitions.com has been working great.

The new account: www.mediadesignusa.com is the only account having problems. I think it is an issue with there new servers.

Just my opinion.

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

Have any of you tried disabling the "extra web security" option with dreamhost? If you go into the "edit" feature of your domain in dreamhost you can enable/disable this feature. Many people forget that dreamhost even offers this feature.

You could not even install the previous version of Zen Cart on Dreamhost without disabling this feature or else you would get errors. They say in their wiki that the extra web security may cause havoc with some php coding.

Anyway, I installed Zen Cart on dreamhost yesterday and had some login problems. I then remembered about the security and disabled and reinstalled and it runs fine now.

Dreamhost's "Extra Web Security" is simply the activation of apache mod_security with their home-grown selection of configuration settings.
Apparently those settings are tightened so much that the kind of data transferred back and forth between Zen Cart screens gets blocked (that's an overly-simplified statement). Hence the need to turn it off in order to run Zen Cart on their servers.

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

cURL. This is un-needed. I was trying to use a sandbox account to run tests, but couldn't connect to paypal, got errors, missing information, etc. Just by chance I created a product for $0.10 and went throught the purchase process, which intern, worked perfectly.

Moral of the story: Sandbox may be causing issues that aren't neccessarily an issue with the LIVE checkout process.

-robj

btw. a purchase for $0.10, actually costed us 38 cents to process (2.9% * $0.10 = $.03 + $.35). Not a good business decision.

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

The ABC of Hosting:
With an all public webhost here is how it works:

  1. A server is fast when it is a new server with almost no customers on it.

  2. The webhost offers the storage space and the transfer of a dedicated server to all customers. Everybody signs up. The server is full with thousands of customers, the server is now slow.

  3. Since the resources of the servers are offered (in theory) to all customers, if all the thousands of customers on the server try to use it, the server crashes and it brings downtime to everybody on the server.

  4. Webhosts are offering so much ressources because they know that 95% of all website never uses more than 50MB of storage and 2GB of bandwith per month (do you think they are stupid ?). Just a few sites on their servers are using all the resources but when your site is on that server, there is no resources left for your small site.

  5. When your site is using too much ressources, your site is suspended and it will probably be suspended before you can use all the resources offered in your plan. You will use to much processor resources.

This is shared hosting. Serious businesses do not host their business website on a shared hosting plan, especially if their website IS their business, unless it is a company specialized in business hosting but it won't be that huge storage space with this huge transfer that a lot of them tell you about, and all that for 5 bucks.

For 5 bucks a month you will just get a slow server. If it's fast, this means they don't have that many customers on it yet, but it's gonna come. Don't worry about it. Lol.

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

Aranuh, while I agree with most of what you said please do NOT lump all shared hosting services together,
there are those few that do limit the number of users and are dedicated to making your services work well under load and keepng that load low

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

Araunah, sounds like you have personal problem and probably due to a bad experience with a Hoster. I would not agree with any of your points.

As an experienced Hoster, I know what goes into properly maintaining a Server. Yes, there are many Hosters that overload their Servers and treat Clients like numbers but there are many Hosters who do not. The trick is to sort the wheat from the chaff.

As to the slowness problem mentioned by treebo, the site is incredibly slow! As the connection to the Server itself is not slow I can only presume mySQL is being hammered on that Server. You can judge for yourself by turning on 'Display Parse Time' in your Admin section. Parse time of 1 second or more is considered slow.

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

Hello Araunah,

Id say your comments are bang on correct with "certain" hosting providers. There are several business models and the points you have outlined are pretty valid for the "massive overselling" model.

having said this, there are MANY providers who sell business grade or enterprise grade shared hosting - but, as you so correctly indicated, it will not have massive resource allotments and it will certainly cost more then $5 :)

Re: Zencart slow on Dreamhost?

well dreamhost is a very big hosting company, and I agree with that the mysql is being hammered, but how do I fix this? is there anything I can do to make it faster without switching hosts right now.
