It's called Script Editor, and it's in the AppleScript folder in Applications. (There's also Automator, but that won't help you write scripts.)

But if I'm reading your other posts correctly, you're looking for more of a programmer's editor. For that, you can't do better than BBEdit. Pick up the free version at www.barebones.com and check it out. Other than Mail and Firefox, it's my most used application, and has been for the last decade and a half. Really!

Re: Favorite Tools of the Trade

cheers for that. :)

i was lucky enough to work alongside one of the original html beta testers, at a place called Bigtree in 2002.

thanks to your (very) helpful suggestion, i now remember his fave app was .. BBedit!
the 'search and replace' feature was astounding and most excellent.

actually i learned some CSS basics around that time .. there were quite a few considerations in terms of browser compatability. i hoped to avoid that via PHP, however it seems CSS is very much a part of things these days, more than ever.

oh yeah, on the d-load now.. an impressive 15.5 megs!

15.5 megs

A lot of that is Demo Products and the associated information - Be sure to install the Demo when doing your first install - lots of good information ... and get the book - it is worth every penny.

DrByte:

It's been awhile since we had a discussion about who recommends what tools and why.

So, here's an open forum to tell us what you use and why. After a brief period of discussion, we'll tally things up with a summary of recommended tools ... which will hopefully be a help to newbies and pro's alike.

So, will you share with us your picks for these tools? ... with a commentary on the reasons why you prefer them over others? Also mention whether they are free or require the purchase of a license.
Don't be afraid to repeat your choice even if someone else has mentioned it... popularity "is" valuable in this case.

Feel free to politely note any "bad choices" you may be aware of, and why.
(Nobody needs to take any offense if someone dis's your tools... let's keep this friendly, okay!)

**1. >

  1. What do you use/prefer?
  1. Why or Why Not, or why not something else?
  1. Are they free?

 you see I am able to clap... about all...

Even though I am old (8086) Seattle community schooled, don't think I understand squat. PHP just sucked. You ole' guyz know what I mean. It is ONLY through the passions of 'regular, everyday, living people' that PHP can do as it does, so well and beyond one could imagine. Unlike Unix, there today is no PHP code that is so, 'exclusive to 'my' need/goals''. My baby is 10yo. She has her own jewelry site because of the free use of Unix and PHP. Very little money is generated, none for me either with the dozens I have. It's like, 'Hey, if we you make good... pass that along...' Unlike, pay for this and that and hope for the best.' Which by the way I did, and failed. I hope that these Zen Cart people, the people that help it work 'more' better, and users that pull their hair out join up in a common, if not different reason to make this Zen Cart Shopping Solution, the very best on Our planet. I am very impressed. Thank you.

Re: Favorite Tools of the Trade

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know of a good program to view sites in IE6. I was on a computer that was running IE6 and went to my site and was not happy with the way it looked. I have Firefox and IE7 so unless I'm on a computer with IE6 I can't fix it.

Thanks,
Kelly

Kim:

http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IEUnfortunately doesn't run properly on Vista. But IE Tester does. It doesn't go back as far as the multiple IE package (just to 5.5) and doesn't support the IE developer toolbars or flash in IE6 :( but does have the advantage of looking forward by allowing testing in the IE8 beta.

Re: Favorite Tools of the Trade

:clap:I love Homesite, and have had that since Bradbury started out! I do have Dreamweaver, but was told not to use it as it adds
unwanted code. Better to learn one thing at a time! > bobdog:

Gerald must be my clone.

I use DreamWeaver, JASC for images, Firefox web developers tools.

What nobody has mentioned is my favorite text editor. I like HomeSite. It comes bundled with DreamWeaver. Most of the time, I use HomeSite to edit everything. Comes with CSS editors too. I like the way it handles my php to show lines.

DreamWeaver is a nice tool. I use it when designing new sites. Nice control of CSS. After a site is launched and functional, I use HomeSite to edit my html and php and CSS. HomeSite also integrates with TopStyle CSS editor. Good Stuff Maynard! (from the movie...oh gosh I must be old.)

The DreamWeaver packages are not cheap. But well worth the money. And a nice toy.

Doesn't anybody use HomeSite anymore? It used to be made by Allaire, then Macromedia bought it, and now it is Adobe.

Re: Favorite Tools of the Trade

I'm tellin' ya! What kachinas said!

Homesite is way cool in highlighting the php lines and such. And you can run it with xampp to see "live" changes on your local machine in the browser tab.

Dreamweaver is cool, but I almost always use Homesite. I like the control of writing my own code...and there are times where Dreamweaver will back you in a corner with their tools and stuff- I usually kick it in to Homesite (they are integrated) and code it the way I want it.

Homesite has not been updated in several years now, and I'm fearing it is part of the past.

And Dreamweaver is cool in the FTP. It will upload all dependent files/images without you having to sort through and remember files. As far as I know, Filezilla has no such function.

Re: Favorite Tools of the Trade

I use TopStyle for quick edits, and Aptana for more involved work. I'm about to get my hands on a copy of Dreamweaver CS4 so we'll see how that works out. In the past I've enjoyed using it in code mode, but never really got into the WYSIWYG way of doing things.

Re: Favorite Tools of the Trade

I use PSP 9 . I tried X but absolutely hated the changes in it. Will stick with 9 until I find another program :)

Stuff4Toys:

Anyone using Paint Shop Pro X2? I have not upgraded since version 7 but I am needing more features now than before. Besides all the photo editing crap, is the core program similar to the older versions?

If not x2 what versions are you using?

Thanks

ABSOLUTELY! PSP9 is still the best paint/photo program I've used. Photoshop is the most unintuitive train wreck ever. Ya it's powerful, but it comes with frustration. PSP9 is quick, intuitive controls, and still quite powerful. I also dislike the new Corel PSP X. Its too much like Photoshop. All the intuitive stuff is gone.

I've been sticking with PSP9 for the past 5+ years and don't plan on leaving it.
