So to make account optional for returning customers you could furnish them with the link to login ( /index.php?main_page=login, this could be done in the order email) change the wording in login and remove the bottom box , and change the password wording to say enter password or leave blank and a password will be emailed to you?
Just thinking out loud here.
Options are always a good thing.
I do this when my customer has placed their third order: For their shipping confirmation, instead of sending them the email through Zen Cart (its too stale), I send them a more personalized email saying something like this:
Thanks again for your order! Your delivery confirmation number is 0000 0000 0000 0000 and your package should be arriving in 2-5 business days.
We would also like to offer you the option of saving your information on our secure server so that in the future you can checkout faster. You will also be able to save your cart contents for later. This option is normally reserved for wholesale customers, but we like to offer this option to our repeat customers as well.
If you are interested, please reply to this email and we will gladly take care of this for you.
They reply yes, I email them back and tell them that my cart will send them a randomly generated password that they can change once they login. I give them the link to login (I moved mine from mainpage=login to mainpage=create_account). mainpage=login is where all customers end up when they click on checkout. I do not want login fields there because I want the checkout to appear more as an express checkout type of thing where I am just asking for billing info. Wholesale customers and other customers with passwords have a link on the top left of the page that takes them to mainpage=create_account. You can see all of this on buttonbunny.com, but please do not create accounts there. I have never given buttonbunny.com out before because I didn't want people going there to create test accounts, that is what my test site is for (craftzombie.com/shop2). Go to buttonbunny.com and look at the links on the top right. Click on "Wholesale Login" and see that it is actually mainpage="create_account". Now add somthing to your cart and click on checkout and you will go to mainpage=login.
i talk too much. :P
P.S. This all sounds like a big hassle when you look at it on paper, but it really isn't. I have many customers who shop once and maybe might come back again. And then I have a few who just keep buying. Those are the ones I offer this option to.
