stockFilter for 1.3.5

gmrm:

Hi gjh42 yes i am using 1.3.9h but the mod isn't working as planned anyway and i don't know a lot about php so think i will have to get back to the drawing board as the author has abandoned this mod.

many thanks anyway

Is it just me? Or does he say that like I should feel obligated to continue updating and supporting a mod I don't even use myself any longer?

I came on here for help not a slanging match, i said "you have abandoned the mod" which you stated that you have.

I originally asked if you were still about and all i got was "I am, but I can't help a "cannot get this to work" post. "

so i asked a question which was then answered by "I really can't offer any support on this" which you should of stated in the first post.

So i dont know what your problem is as i merely came here for help which is what you cannot give me so i don't see the point in you posting silly comments on here.

Where do i state or imply that you should "feel obligated to continue updating and supporting a mod I don't even use myself any longer"

I merely pointed out that you have indeed abandoned it and i was asking for help from anyone that feels like they can help me.

Re: stockFilter for 1.3.5

Please be aware anyone trying to use this mod that it does indeed mess with seo. I have tested this on 3 sites with and without ssu installed and google has started to index random pages ie:

gloopy.co.uk/retro-gaming/stock_filter/in_stock

whatever page your on it adds this to the end stock_filter/in_stock so google will index this for every page you have meaning duplicate content.

A moderator should remove this mod from the download section as this could have really bad effects for anyone that installs it.

Re: stockFilter for 1.3.5

gjh42:

You can find that page if you specifically Google it... does that mean G thinks it is duplicate content?

Technically, yes it would think that 1 page is 3 pages all with the same content as this mod adds in stock and out of stock on the end of each page, so yes Google would put you down in the search results.

As for the comment, it was not a clickable link so the big G would not find my site through that comment as it was just text.

Google "gloopy stock_filter" and then when it says "did you mean gloopy stock filter" click on search for gloopy stock_filter" instead and you will see what i mean

Lol... you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

Also you state you "have not used this mod for yearsand would not recognize your own code" so how do you know what as changed in zen cart and how this mod works with this. I have clearly tested it and in my opinion it should be removed as this WILL seriously ruin sites.

Re: stockFilter for 1.3.5

well your "opinion" is entirely incorrect. What you're doing is taking your EXTREMELY limited knowledge and attempting to make a very bold statement that essentially declares my contrib as somehow "unsafe". Even though I've "abandoned" it, of course I still take offense to that ridiculous attack/claim/bs.

Re: stockFilter for 1.3.5

What is my EXTREMELY limited knowledge ??? I CLEARLY state the facts of what this mod does. i am not a web designer but i have installed this correctly and this mod CLEARLY adds a prefix to every page. If you think i am talking rubbish then show me by installing this mod on the latest version of zen cart and then tell me i am talking rubbish.

Stop posting pointless statements about me and back up with an answer , i came here for help and that IS WHAT YOU CANNOT OFFER. I am trying to help other people who may want to install this mod, look at your previous comments as you are making yourself look silly

"well your "opinion" is entirely incorrect"

so back it up, like you keep saying you have not touched it for years and have abandoned it so you do not know what this mod does at this present time. Yes it probably worked on older versions of zen cart

Re: stockFilter for 1.3.5

Sigh... you're being a fool. Stop yelling and calling me "silly" if you want to have a discussion. From your VERY first post, you have not once posted anything conducive to a conversation. "it doesn't work" (no mention of errors) "it will seriously run sites" (which is just ridiculous).

Your extremely limited knowledge is that you keep pressing on about it adding a prefix [sic] to every page and then having some weird leap of logic that this for some reason will "ruin" a site. Its just a bizarre statement so I really don't even know how to respond. I've already pointed out to you how it doesn't add a "prefix" at all as you're describing... that's clearly (as you seemed to acknowledge previously) done by your SEO mod, but even if it did... so what? You haven't made any sensible comment on how you go from "there's a prefix [sic]" to "its the end of the world" at all.

Your opinion IS entirely incorrect. The adding of a SUFfix to your URL is not going to "ruin" your site in any way, shape, or form. IF you're making some strange leap of faith that it may affect your Google rankings (which obviously is NOT "ruining" a site) then say so. Saying your site will be "ruined" if you use this mod is tantamount to telling people I wrote a virus or crappy code and installing this mod will mess with their code or database and actually cause damage, which is obviously not the case.

You're right... you are NOT a web designer. You are by NO means an SEO expert. You have zero qualifications for making the statements you've made.

You're also right in some of your recap of events. You came on and asked for help (poorly) and I responded (just as poorly since you really gave me zero option for helping even if I wanted to) and you got pissy and I said I couldn't/wouldn't help because it is a dated mod designed for a previous version of Zen Cart. Dissatisfied with that, you inexplicably decided to return and proclaim that I'm an e-terrorist out to cause harm to people's businesses and websites.

Sure I'm being dramatic. It seems fitting. If you don't want to use the mod, don't. You're the one who's dredged up an old mod wanting it to do something it wasn't designed for and asking me to code for you for free because, well, I guess you're entitled to that and I'm obligated as the author to never "abandon" a work done and really not used for over 4 and half bloody years.

Re: stockFilter for 1.3.5

So do i need qualifications to make a statement that this mod does indeed add to the end of every page a query ??? (if i turn the seo mod off this is what i get :-

index.php?stock_filter=in_stock&main_page=index
index.php?stock_filter=all&main_page=index

and thats just on the page

You still have not answered my question, nor have backed up that this mod does actually work or not have you. Instead you seem to be more bothered about me.

If you are such an expert that you say you are, why have you not tested this mod out ?? Instead of putting me down and wasting your time here why not bother to even try it out. And yes this mod will affect seo purposes in the state its in. I do not want to continue this arguement as it is pointless, yes you are clearly more experienced than me and i respect that but i am only pointing out that the mod in its current state does not work.

p.s if you are really bothered pm me and i will pay for your services as i think this could be one of the better mods for zen cart if people could see the benefits. This could benefit every zen cart owner in a really good way if it worked right.

That's fine, but then you may as well also come on here and declare that the sky is blue on a nice day. So what? Its supposed to do that. That's entirely normal.

gmrm:

You still have not answered my question, nor have backed up that this mod does actually work or not have you. Instead you seem to be more bothered about me.
You haven't asked a question yet. An yes, the mod does work... for the software it was designed for. If you wish to install an old fresh copy of Zen, then it will work just fine.

gmrm:

If you are such an expert that you say you are
your words, certainly not mine.

gmrm:

why have you not tested this mod out ??
Huh? I tested it THOROUGHLY. Again, on the system it was designed for. I'm not sure how you aren't getting that point yet.
gmrm:

Instead of putting me down and wasting your time here why not bother to even try it out.
Why should I try it out? I don't need it any more. Plus... as you pointed out... it doesn't work on the current version. I believe you. I never said you were wrong on that point. Well.. OK, I can't completely concede it because it may very well work without SEO mods... but I doubt it. PHP has changed and so has the core since my mod was last updated.
gmrm:

And yes this mod will affect seo purposes in the state its in.Nope.
gmrm:

I do not want to continue this arguementBut its soooOOOOooOO much fun.
gmrm:

as it is pointlessyep
gmrm:

yes you are clearly more experienced than meProbably... but we're all here to learn
gmrm:

and i respect that
(I sense a "but" coming on)> gmrm:

butBingo!
gmrm:

i am only pointing out that the mod in its current state does not work. No, that's not at all what you pointed out... which is why I took such exception to your statements. The fact that it does or doesn't work with the current version of Zen is really inconsequential. One should EXPECT it not to work after so many version changes. But you didn't say that... you said it would "damage" or "ruin" sites if installed. And that simply is not the case. Chalk it up to poor wording? Fine. Done. I accept that.

gmrm:

p.s if you are really bothered pm me and i will pay for your services as i think this could be one of the better mods for zen cart if people could see the benefits. This could benefit every zen cart owner in a really good way if it worked right. Thanks for the offer, but no. I agree it would be useful. And it would be nice if someone that had the time and inclination would run with it (or start from scratch) and update it for the current version. Even better, I've always believed it to be a mod worthy of being rolled into the core code so that its just available right out of the box. But suggestions like those pretty well fall of deaf ears so I suggest neither of us hold our breath on that one.

Despite the fact - or more accurately BECAUSE of the fact - that I have an obsessive-compulsive REQUIREMENT to answer posts no matter how much of a waste of time it is... I simply don't have the time to look at my old code and update it. I'm not familiar with the latest version of Zen. I've been waiting what seems like years for 1.4 or 2.0 or whatever to come out... but until then I've moved on to more productive adventures. If I stopped with this discussion alone I may have the time... but I still lack the desire.

It was never offered with any type of warranty, expressed nor implied. I have no obligation to maintain it. I feel an obligation to defend it when unfairly attacked, but that's my deal.

  • Steven

ps. OK, for $2k I'd do it ;)

end of thread so can a mod now remove this pointless mod that has wasted my time and will continue to waste other zenners time ??

Re: stockFilter for 1.3.5

Actually, since the original function of this mod is acknowledged to be a very useful one, keeping the code available for someone to use as a jump-off point for the current ZC version seems wise.
Anybody who installs a 5 year old mod that says "for 1.3.5" in the title on a new site... well I won't characterize them, but they obviously weren't aware of what that might mean. There are some mods that can break the version they were designed for (and are flagged with moderator warnings), but if the code is inherently sound, it should stay until someone updates it.

Re: stockFilter for 1.3.5

I apologise then as in the mod section I have used many mods that are for previous versions and for us newbies I thought the mod section was for mods that should work on the current version. I was merely pointing out that google index's these queries as pages. If there is anyone out there who would like to work on this mod I would gladly pay zen cart (donate) and them for there time.

Many thanks to s_mack for the starting point.

Re: stockFilter for 1.3.5

Does anyone know how to tell google to not index the queries, i have asked in the google forums and they told me :-

You should put a canonical link on every page that is substantially the same as another page - and you want the other page to show up in the search results, but not this one.

You would put a canonical link on this page:
https://www.gloopy.co.uk/playstation-3/stock_filter/in_stock

Your canonical link should then be:

<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.gloopy.co.uk/playstation-3/" />

and every page that the filter is added too. Is there any way to add a couple of lines to robots.txt since that would be a mammoth task ???
