Newsletter Center V. 0.8 BETA

Thanks Beez for the update. Ill try to get it installed on a 1100 member site, see how it goes.....

Beez:

Hi there all!

Now it's time for a new Beta version.
This time I've done some general cleaning up. No more references to "Cambridge" I've also put all the files in one archive, no more need to get the original files.

I've made small changes here and there, so to be sure you have the latest one make a full check. I've also rewritten the read me, hopefully to the better...

Cheers!

FYI: I've got a working mod a clients site. Hasn't been up for that so long so some minor bugs might still be there...

Re: Newsletter Center V. 0.8 BETA

Thanks Beez!!! I'll be sure to give it a try tonight and see how it goes. As far as testing I have done a bit in IT in the past, however is there anything specific you have had problems with in the past and and area that you feel needs to be focused on and thoroughly tested?

Thanks again :o)

Re: Newsletter Center V. 0.8 BETA

Beez,

I've installed phplist_0_8_5 and am still working through my setup. So far I found one minor omission:
NEWSLETTER_UNSUBSRIBE_FINISHED is not defined.
In my installation I added a definition in:
/includes/languages/english/mytemplate/newsletter_center.php

I'm able to unsubscribe a user without any trouble, but I cannot seem to subscribe a new user (neither with nor without creating an account). I'm sure I've probably messed-up my configuration somehow and am still working through the details.

I'll provide another update after I spend some more time with the install.

Thanks for continuing the work on this mod!

Craig

Re: Newsletter Center V. 0.8 BETA

Found another typo...this one is more critical

In file:
/admin/customers.php

on or around line #997
From this:

$existing_subscription_query = $db->Execute("select listid from " . PHPLIST_DB . "" . PHPLIST_TABLE_PREFIX . "listuser where listid = " . PHPLIST_LISTNO . " and userid = " . $existing_email->fields['id'] . "");

Change to this:

$existing_subscription_query = $db->Execute("select listid from " . PHPLIST_DB . "" . PHPLIST_TABLE_PREFIX . "listuser where listid = " . PHPLIST_LISTNO . " and userid = '" . $existing_email->fields['id'] . "'");

This resolves an sql error during new customer account creation/deletion which is also preventing customer id assignment.

Will post more as it comes...

Re: Newsletter Center V. 0.8 BETA

Looks like you have come a long way on this mod, GREAT JOB! I was reading through the Read me v.0.8.5.txt file and I did not notice a list of files that are
A: over-ridden
B: over-wrote

Could you please supply a list of these files so I can do a compare with my files?

Thanks for all your work

Re: Newsletter Center V. 0.8 BETA

Beez:

In short: As far as I know the Newsletter Subscribe adds the possibility to subscribe to the newsletter without have to sign up an account. The Newsletter Center is a bridge between Zen Cart and PHPlist mirroring accounts in Zen Cart to PHPlist. You use PHPlist instead of Zen Cart to send newsletters.

Hope that helps you a bit.

Hey Beez -

I just read this thread front to back because i wanted to know why this mod didn't have a contribution page in the downloads area and see what the support community was like for this mod.

Since you have put a bit of time into revising this project that was started by Masterblaster before he disappeared into thin air, have you considered adding this mod to the downloads section? It would certainly help keep track of the the "version updates" you have been doing, and also keep people tuned in to what version of zen-cart you were doing your mods on.

The last time Masterblaster wrote anything on these forums was July 2nd, 2007 - So that's disappointing, but i guess he got wrapped up in other stuff...

Anyway, i'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

I did a WinDiff compare and only found the following three files to be overwritten, the rest seems to be Newsletter Center specific.

.\includes\modules\create_account.php
.\includes\modules\pages\account_edit\header_php.php
.\admin\customers.php

Could someone else confirm.

Just be carefull if you are already using the "Newsletter only subscribe" mod as it also changed these files.

Heathenmagic

Hey Heathenmagic,

This past week i have been making my way through the code very carefully. So far i have updated the files all to match changes in 1.3.8a (without changing any of the custom code.. yet..). As of yesterday i got this to PARTLY work. Now i am starting to make my way through the code that doesn't - such as the sidebox, the edit order in the Admin, etc..

When i am done am most definitely going to create an official download on the Zen-Cart project website since (to the best of my knowledge) it doesn't have one already.

Hopefully i can have this done in a week or two (hopefully less!) I will be sure to make a post on here when it's to a working state.

Re: Newsletter Center V. 0.8 BETA

I'm currently using the mod with many, many hours invested in clean-up, patching and adaptation for existing mods. I also have sideboxes working correctly. Generally, I'm pleased with the end result, but the mod and work-arounds have become very intrusive.

My biggest concern is how much effort it will now take migrate to the next version of Zen Cart.

If the mod can be compartmentalized in a future contribution (and I'm not sure it can to my satisfaction), I'd recommend it. In it's current state...nope.

Best,
Craig

Hey Craig,

When you express your concern for the effort needed to migrate it to the next version of Zen Cart, do you mean from 1.3.8a onward? Or from 1.3.7 onward?

As i mentioned in the post just before yours, i have been working to mod the code to 1.3.8a and have been rather successful in doing so, so far. You are far more familiar with this code than i am, as well as a more experienced coder - would it be alright if i shoot a couple questions your way?

Thanks!

Re: Newsletter Center V. 0.8 BETA

MrMeech,

To be more clear, the mod rework expanded into other contributions (i.e. COWOA was a problem), core code and the Zen database itself (integrating the userlist into the same db as Zen to reduce complexity...which also increases uncomfortability).

So, upgrading to any new revision of ZC from any current version and carrying forward all of my bubble-gum and shoe-strings pasted to this mod looks very daunting.

Go ahead and drop me a PM. I'll assist where I can...

Re: Newsletter Center V. 0.8 BETA

I have FINALLY got back around to this project and have phplist (most current) installed and working the way I want. I have downloaded the most recent mod I could find in the thread from beez phplist_8_5 and I am getting the following error

0 Error - Could not connect to Database
in:
[SELECT uniqid FROM user WHERE email='' LIMIT 1]

So which file did I go wrong in? The phplist program is installed in the root dir in a dir called lists. I only copied the files from lists and all sub-folders as indicated in the phplist docs.

I also had to do a little bit of hacking as I know the original files from beez were not core overwrites, but were overwrites of files I had already modded.

Anyone have any ideas??? :D

What page are you getting this error on? and does it only happen on one page?

Also, just FYI - i'm in the process of fixing this mod a bit but i won't be done for probably a week or two...

Re: Newsletter Center V. 0.8 BETA

I know that mrmeech is working feverishly on this mod (and I cannot wait to see what becomes of this and hopefully it will be available under all the other downloads).

On this post here I looked for this code in admin\customers and I do not see this. However, I do have something similar in:

includes/modules/create_account.php. Is that what you meant or did I mess up somewhere. :D

Re: Newsletter Center V. 0.8 BETA

thanks mrmeech :D

I have gotten that error to go away now ( I believe it was a path issue and after sleeping on it realized it first thing this morning.) Now there are two new problems.

  1. On this section - newsletter_center&action=idrequest

I enter my email address and hit the continue button and get the following:

We are sorry but there is no such user with the unique id you entered. Please try again or obtain your unique id here. I click on that link and it is basically stuck in a loop. I even added the account from scratch.

  1. If I use the newsletter sidebox I get this problem on this page:

newsletter_center&action=display_message&message=30

Newsletter Center - Error: Preferences Access Denied

You are not allowed to edit or see the preferences of the email address, you entered. You must supply a valid unique id for this email in order to do so. If you lost your unique id, you can obtain it again here.

We do this to respect your personal data, so they are only visible to you - Thank you for understanding!

Not sure which way is up from here

Yeah... now you're getting into the really messy part of what was coded. I'm not even going to try to give advice on that part of the code because i've decided to do away or re-write with a bunch of it. Your best bet is to hang out for a week or two till i get it sorted out in a better (and functional) way.

I would venture to bet that if you were to log into the site as a customer and clicked to change your newsletter preferences, that that page wouldn't work either... ya?

I absolutely agree with mrmeech. I had to gut this section of the code and start over, too.

I don't even see that option anywhere. Stupid no good for nothing !@$%*@ bleeping bleeping code. There I feel better now :D

Can't wait for a pre-release and cleaning up our mailing lists getting ready to go. If you need anyone to help test, please PM me and I will load it and test (however it would be on a live site). Thanks again for all your hard work on this.
