Still very confused about what files to edit...

Hi,

I am fairly web savy, and have a decent knowledge of HTML and web-site building. But I am truely at a loss with Zen-Cart.

Were do I start to edit files. There are lots of folders that seem to contain similar files.
To make a long sob story short.
I am trying to sell clothes online.
I love this site (which is using zen-cart).
And I almost just want to cop their layout and insert my own graphics.
http://newton-store.net/

Were do I start?

I can't find the header to change the navigation.
I can't find the file to change for the center column.
Nor can I find the footer

I have created a template directory, but it is empty. What files do I copy in there to start tweaking?

-Frustrated and overwhelmed..

And I almost just want to cop their layout and insert my own graphics.Well good Luck!!! This is not html it is server side and as such the html is assembled from many files at the server and the result is passed to the client machine.

Check the FAQ's ^^ above and find "Top Ten" and also the wiki farther up in the nav bar. These should get you started and you will begin to see the light...

Re: Still very confused about what files to edit...

Hi,

I am making some headway.
How do I deactive Optional catagories.
I am looking at the HTML code, that reads.

<!--bof-optional categories tabs navigation display-->

....

I want to move those catagories to the sidebar eventually, but for now they are adding extra padding to my layout.

Re: Still very confused about what files to edit...

I'm guessing you mean the horizontal menu at the top of the page.

Turn it off in:

admin -> configuration -> layout settings -> Categories-Tabs Menu ON/OFF (set to 0)

Re: Still very confused about what files to edit...

First off, I'd remove the following from your stylesheet.css. They are not needed if you are using version 1.3.5.

/*HEADER CSS*/

TABLE.header {
  background-image: url();
  background-repeat: repeat-x;
  background-color: #ffffff;
  border-right: 1px solid #ffffff;
  border-left: 1px solid #ffffff;
  border-bottom: 1px solid #ffffff;
}

TABLE.headerNavigation {
  background-image: url();
  background-color: #ffffff;
  border-right: 1px solid #ffffff;
  border-left: 1px solid #ffffff;
  border-bottom: 1px solid #ffffff;
  width: 100% !important;
}

TD.headerNavigation {
  position: relative;
  vertical-align: middle;
  font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif;
  font-size: 11px;
  color:#000000;
  letter-spacing:0px;
  padding: 5px;
}

TD.breadCrumb {
  font-size: 10px;
  font-weight: bold;
  color: #9a9a9a;
  padding: 3px;
  border-bottom: 1px dotted #9a9a9a;
}

TD.headerNavigation A, TD.headerNavigation A:visited, td.footertop a  {
  font-weight: none;
  color: #666666;
  border: 0px none;
}

TD.headerNavigation A:hover, td.footertop a:hover  {
  color: #FF6699;
  border: 0px none;
}

TR.headerError {
  background: #ff0000;
}

TD.headerError {
  font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif;
  font-size: 12px;
  background: #ff0000;
  color: #ffffff;
  font-weight : bold;
  text-align : center;
}

TR.headerInfo {
  background: #00ff00;
}

TD.headerInfo {
  font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif;
  font-size: 12px;
  background: #00ff00;
  color: #ffffff;
  font-weight: bold;
  text-align: center;
}

Hi, do you have any idea why images that are links have a pixel border?
I couldnt not find that in the style sheet.

Re: Still very confused about what files to edit...

You'll need to add the following to your stylesheet.css

img a {border: none;}

In checking your site, it appears that your css is not rendering correctly.

If you are using v 1.3.5, try copying the stylesheet.css from template_default and place it in your custom template directory.

Re: Still very confused about what files to edit...

Hi Clyde,

I put the style sheet from the templates in custom directory. And now the website looks like a carton of neapolitan icecream :)

But atleast now I can see exactly what I need to change with the style sheets.
Thanks.

I only have a few more changes for the overall layout.
1)How do I completely reomove "Congratulations you have installed Zen...." from home page.

2)How do I deactive "New Products for Month" section on home page. The fixes on the Forum are only creating an error.

3)I want the Top Nav "Home, Login" to appear underneath my logo. Right now it appears to be centered and next to the Logo. Seems like a CSS line wrap issue.
Should be
<<LOGO ART>>
HOME | LOGIN | NAV LINK 1 | NAV LINK 2

Re: Still very confused about what files to edit...

Check here in the wiki for an answer to #1.
http://www.zen-cart.com/wiki/index.php/Top_10_questions#How_do_I_Change_the_Congratulations.21_Message.3F

For #2 admin -> configuration -> index listing -> show new products on main page (set to 0) =off

#3 can be accomplished as follows:

in includes -> templates -> YOUR_TEMPLATE -> common -> tpl_header.php

move everything between
<!--bof-navigation display-->
and

<!--eof-navigation display-->

to below

<!--eof-branding display-->

<!--bof-navigation display-->
and

<!--eof-navigation display-->

If you have problems with the last part let me know.

Re: Still very confused about what files to edit...

Addendum to my previous post.

an even simpler solution to #1.

If you want to eliminate “Welcome Guest!” Would you like to log yourself in?” message completely, turn off the Customer Greeting in your Admin -> Configuration -> Layout settings -> Customer Greeting -> Show on Index Page and set to 0.

clydejones:

Check here in the wiki for an answer to #1.

<!--eof-branding display-->

<!--bof-navigation display-->
and

<!--eof-navigation display-->

If you have problems with the last part let me know.

Hi, the problem still persists.
Here is the code from tpl_header.php

<!--bof-branding display-->
<div id="logoWrapper">
    <div id="logo"><?php echo '<a href="' . HTTP_SERVER . DIR_WS_CATALOG . '">' . zen_image($template->get_template_dir(HEADER_LOGO_IMAGE, DIR_WS_TEMPLATE, $current_page_base,'images'). '/' . HEADER_LOGO_IMAGE, HEADER_ALT_TEXT) . '</a>'; ?></div>
<?php if (HEADER_SALES_TEXT != '' || (SHOW_BANNERS_GROUP_SET2 != '' && $banner = zen_banner_exists('dynamic', SHOW_BANNERS_GROUP_SET2))) { ?>
    <div id="taglineWrapper">
<?php
              if (HEADER_SALES_TEXT != '') {
?>
      <div id="tagline"><?php echo HEADER_SALES_TEXT;?></div>
<?php
              }
?>
<?php
              if (SHOW_BANNERS_GROUP_SET2 != '' && $banner = zen_banner_exists('dynamic', SHOW_BANNERS_GROUP_SET2)) {
                if ($banner->RecordCount() > 0) {
?>
      <div id="bannerTwo" class="banners"><?php echo zen_display_banner('static', $banner);?></div>
<?php
                }
              }
?>
    </div>
<?php } // no HEADER_SALES_TEXT or SHOW_BANNERS_GROUP_SET2 ?>
</div>
<!--eof-branding display-->
<!--bof-navigation display-->
<div id="navMainWrapper">
<div id="navMain">
    <ul class="back">
    <li><?php echo '<a href="' . HTTP_SERVER . DIR_WS_CATALOG . '">'; ?><?php echo HEADER_TITLE_CATALOG; ?></a></li>
<?php if ($_SESSION['customer_id']) { ?>
    <li><a href="<?php echo zen_href_link(FILENAME_LOGOFF, '', 'SSL'); ?>"><?php echo HEADER_TITLE_LOGOFF; ?></a></li>
    <li><a href="<?php echo zen_href_link(FILENAME_ACCOUNT, '', 'SSL'); ?>"><?php echo HEADER_TITLE_MY_ACCOUNT; ?></a></li>
<?php
      } else {
        if (STORE_STATUS == '0') {
?>
    <li><a href="<?php echo zen_href_link(FILENAME_LOGIN, '', 'SSL'); ?>"><?php echo HEADER_TITLE_LOGIN; ?></a></li>
<?php } } ?>

<?php if ($_SESSION['cart']->count_contents() != 0) { ?>
    <li><a href="<?php echo zen_href_link(FILENAME_SHOPPING_CART, '', 'NONSSL'); ?>"><?php echo HEADER_TITLE_CART_CONTENTS; ?></a></li>
    <li><a href="<?php echo zen_href_link(FILENAME_CHECKOUT_SHIPPING, '', 'SSL'); ?>"><?php echo HEADER_TITLE_CHECKOUT; ?></a></li>
<?php }?>
</ul>
</div>
<div class="navMainSearch forward"><?php require(DIR_WS_MODULES . 'sideboxes/search_header.php'); ?></div>
<br class="clearBoth" />
</div>
<!--eof-navigation display-->

Again, you can look at my site to refresh your self with the problem.
I think it has to do with some kind of liquid layout (percentages) somewere in the code.

I'd like for all of the columns to be a fixed width if possible. So perhaps we need to set the headWrapper to a fixed width?

Well here is my url again.

Thanks again, for all of your help!

I was able to deactivate that via .php and the Admin based upon your earlier post.

Re: Still very confused about what files to edit...

This may be the problem.

In your tpl_header.php

You need to move these two lines

<!--bof-header logo and navigation display-->

<div id="headerWrapper">

to above the line

<!--bof-branding display-->

Re: Still very confused about what files to edit...

Hi clyde,

I cheated the problem. I inserted some carriage returns to space the Header down below the LOGO.

So I was correct. The header is wrapping itself behind the logo, and underneath the logo does that make sense.

Well, If I could insert some text to align the rest of the navigation to the left I guess that would be a rugged fix.

take a look : http://zulurose.com/eCommerce/

Re: Still very confused about what files to edit...

AH HA!

It **was **a style sheet thing.
.navMain text-Align: center;

#navMainWrapper, #navSuppWrapper, #navCatTabsWrapper {
	margin: 0em;
	/* background-color: #FFFFFF; */
	font-weight: bold;
	color: #666666;
	height: 1%;
	width: 100%;
	text-align: left;
	}

#navMain ul, #navSupp ul, #navCatTabs ul  {
	margin: 0;
	padding:  0.5em 0em;
	list-style-type: none;
	text-align: left;
	line-height: 1.5em;
	}

Now if I could only figure out why the "|" pipe sign is missing between labels.
i.e.
HOME | LOGIN | LINK1 | LINK2

If you select the text with your mouse, you can see a invisible character there.
I wonder if it is linked to css code that reads
"list-style-type: none;

Thanks so far,

ZuluRose
