Installing with WAMP5

I have loaded WAMP 5 and have both the apache and mysql services running. The server is indicated as offline.

I am able to open http:\localhost

However I cannot install zen cart. my folder for zen is as follows c:\wamp\zen\zc_install.

Can you please guide me in installing zc?

Thanks!

Re: Installing with WAMP5

Well, my folder tree goes as follows on a Windows XP sp2 Media Center Edition:
C:/wamp/www/linenspace (which is my store)
Anything in Wamp to be viewed as localhost should be in the www folder

Re: Installing with WAMP5

I followed get em fast's advice and installed wamp5.
I also got the message "server is offline"
There is a button there called "test port 80"
Click on that and see what's running.
Of course, you should open that port first.
Disable anything running (if not Apache).
In the Services console set Apache to start automatically and start the service.
Should work.

Re: Installing with WAMP5

wampp is not quite as good as xampp. If you install xampp you just put it under htdoc - 2 folders in from the install file.

Re: Installing with WAMP5

I wouldn't be so judgemental.
Reasons for it being better?
Just because you install to a different folder?
I find wamp5 works better, but other people might be more used to xampp.
Whatever works for you...

Re: Installing with WAMP5

I guess it has been a couple years since I have installed wampp, so I would not be a great judge.

If you really were looking for an answer out of me, I guess my somewhat uninformed answer would have to be that I do not remember quite so many additional module installation choices in wampp.

About a year ago, I worked for a tech center for about 8 months. All of the techs when asked individually had mentioned to me that, although wampp had been the leader for many years, xampp at that time had more of a development base and as a result, had become a bit more user friendly than wampp at about that time.

My choice to stick with xampp is dependent on the notion that this has continued.

One example of this would be that if this person had installed xampp, they would not be asking where to install anything. It walks you through it.

Hope this answer is sufficient.

Re: Installing with WAMP5

Wamp5 also installs everything for you and it is easy to use and set up.:D Beilana, mabe you should try to install it yourself to see the changes since your last wamp use? Im a newbie to all this so I cant say much but I have tried to install both and I stayed with wamp5 because I liked it better. Also when someone new is trying to install anything they always have questions, I had a million!!

Thanks,
Chad

Re: Installing with WAMP5

From the Zen Cart Manual, page 33:
"Currently, the highest version of XAMPP that is able to work with Zen Cart properly is version 1.4.16. ..
Because Zen Cart only works with MySQL version 4.x, we will need to download an older copy of XAMPP instead of the latest one available."
I did precisely that, wading through Source Forge until I finally found it.
Never could get Apache to run.
With wamp5 I got it up and running in no time, regarding the installation you just have to decompress the zip file to the www directory.
XAMPP is now on version 1.6.1, maybe it works better...
I am willing to test the latest version of XAMPP, to find out if it is true that ZC only works with MySQL 4.x.
Anybody tried that already?

Re: Installing with WAMP5

Hey oxicottin,
Great job.
I do have a couple questions and I ask them publicly so others might benefit.
I am a total newbie to ZC and wamp5, so will ask many questions in the beginning.
I already installed the store, but upon launching the installer get some warnings:
! PHP GD Support = OFF
! GD version = GD
! PHP Output Buffering (gzip) = OFF
I have no idea how to customize a local installation, although installed remotely already with no errors.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Installing with WAMP5

If your running the image handler2 you have to have the G2 Libary installed. Follow the directions on page 75 for the G2. Also, GZip is on page 30... What do you mean customize a local install? You customize it just like you would on your "Paid" server

Let me know if this helps:smile:

Re: Installing with WAMP5

First off: Very nice tutorial, Oxicottin! Thanks for that.

I've hit a bit of a glitch, however. I followed the steps through to when I re-named the config files in c:/wamp/www/zencart. Then, as directed, I opened my browser and entered http://localhost/zencart but got a 404 - Page not found.

Any idea what step I missed?

PS If I enter http://localhost/ in my browser I do get the "Index of /"
Wouldn't that indicate that local host is alive and well?

Re: Installing with WAMP5

try the icon in your tray! scroll to the top and select localhost and tell me what pops up.. also dont type in /zencart just use http://localhost

Note: Be sure you have Apache and MySql running.. The half circle in the tray will be white. If it has red in it you have nothing running or if it has yellow in it you only have 1 thing running

Re: Installing with WAMP5

You know, I just realized that Zen in installed on the c: drive at:

wamp/www/zencart/zen-cart-v1.3.6-full-fileset-10272006/

instead of /zencart. That could be causing this, correct?

Re: Installing with WAMP5

try typing that path in your browser http://localhost/zencart/zen-cart-v1.3.6-full-fileset-10272006/ That could cause problems though. Try installing it in zencart not in zen-cart-v1.3.6-full-fileset-10272006

Im going to check something let me know what it does
