Installing with WAMP5

How do I chmod on a local server?
I have never done this, I always chmoded via ftp or some webhost program.

1. Do you want to just change permissions? If so just right click on the file and select properties then, there will be a check box toward the bottom that says "Read only" just check that.... Hope that helps:D

2. I dont know how you got 2 dist-configure.php files I guss it wouldnt hurt to delete one of them since you never really started doing anything yet.

3. Now as for the files in the .pdf. Well it really doesnt matter since you can get them all in the download section except for the captcha_ttf which was located here http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59539 and this one is better than the one in the download section.

The trick of setting files to read-only in Windows works but what I really need is more granular control, like in chmod.
I can do that easily on the live store but don't know how to do that on the local machine.
I read the article but don't know what cPanel is.
In osCommerce there is something called File Manager, but I cannot find that on the Admin side of Zen Cart.
There must be a way, since what I am doing on the live server is changing permissions on the Apache server.
Please bear with a newbie, I'll have lots of questions in the beginning.

You should access phpMyAdmin from http://localhost/
That opens the wamp5 home page, there is a link there.
If that doesn't work, try uninstalling and re-installing wamp5.
Windows conflicts a lot, I get errors upon boot sometimes "service not started", and have to reboot computer.
Need to check what is running at startup.
Google this: regcleaner Vuorio, a free utility that will clean your startup.

I have used WAMP5 for quite some time and it is a life saver. The only issue that I can find with using ZenCart is that the product description area in the ADMIN CP automatically parses the code that is written when I hit the preview button. This makes for updating a big problem as I have mine formatted quite a bit.

Any help would be appreciated.

ckosloff, I found this post on CMOD using wamp5 http://www.wampserver.com/phorum/read.php?f=2&i=6577&t=6475#reply_6577 and Captcha is the box that you have to put the letters or numbers in to be able to enter the site or personal area.

Damn! I knew this Windows thing didn't work. Of course, I host on a Linux server, that is why I can chmod there.
I am now preparing another machine to run on Ubuntu, in fact I think that I am going to migrate everything to Linux.
Thanks about captcha, it's definitely something I will install.

for curl: you need to edit apache/bin/php.ini. Look for this...
;extension=php_curl.dll
just remove the semicolon, it is commenting out the line.
For gzip: this is a setting that you tweak once the shop is installed...
Log into the Admin side --> Configuration --> Enable GZip compression -->set to 1.

You can also turn output_buffering (gzip) on in the php.ini file, no need to do this in the admin side.
Basically, I have found out that to get rid of most pre-installation errors you just need to edit this file in 3 locations:

1. ;extension=php_curl.dll --> extension=php_curl.dll
2. ;extension=php_gd2.dll --> extension=php_gd2.dll
3. output_buffering = off --> output_buffering = on
   Then save of course, exit, restart Apache (very important) and refresh the browser page to see all green.

I did play around with that nifty feature in WAMP5 that shows the PHP extensions.
Not sure if you can turn them on from there, though.
It is really useful because it shows which ones are enabled, at a glance.
One more word of caution when turning output_buffering on in php.ini: you should then set gzip to 0 in the Admin.
Otherwise the settings are redundant and actually slow down the site.

Here's more work for you, if you want to take it.
I installed today the latest version of WAMP5 1.7.1 (May 07).
It works of course, but I found a glitch:
when switching to PHP4 it loses connection to the database, which wan't happening with the previous version.
Maybe better posted in the wamp5 forums.

This command is created in the WAMP menu after installation of corresponding add-on for 1.7.1.
When switching to PHP4 I lose connection to database, which is restored upon returning to PHP5.
Posting in the WAMP forum didn't work, so tried emailing the developers, still waiting for a response.
WAMP is a great program, but the support...eeewww!
I circumvented the glitch by installing XAMPP in another machine and switching to PHP4 there.
You could also use the preceding version 1.7.0 and the add-on for that one, found in Sourceforge, that older version works.

Oxi's written tutorials explain the installation procedure clearly enough, but if anyone is interested, lynda.com has videos tutorials for free.

When using PHP4 with Wamp5, you need to change the passwords in MYSQL to the "old password" hashing routine that is found in this document:

Once you do that, you can switch between PHP4 and PHP5 without problems.
