Simple SEO URL (OLD version) [support thread]

yellow1912:

The wiki link is always up:
http://wiki.rubikintegration.com/zencart/modules/ssu/installation

Zean:

It appears that Simple SEO URL will not work unless you first install a mod called Module Manager http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?main_page=product_contrib_info&cPath=40_41&products_id=936 . However, Module Manager says: THIS IS ALPHA CODE ... USE AT OWN RISK .
So apparently even before I can try to start down the difficult path of installing Simple SEO URL and getting it to work without ruining my zencart, I have to take what is apparently serious but ill-defined risks. What are the risks?

How much time is involved in getting Simple SEO URL working properly? The Readme.txt file in the file downloaded here make the extremely overly optimistic claim that it only takes 15-20 minutes!

Any comments will be much appreciated. Thanks!

Yellow1912, you are quite right when you say, "Zencart is also a use at your own risk software." However, I would not be using zen-cart if it were "Alpha Code." Zen-cart is stable. Stable refers to a version of software that is substantially identical to a version that has been through enough real-world testing to reasonably assume there are no significant problems, or at least that any problems are known and documented. The alpha build of the software is the build to the internal software testers, that is, people different from the software engineers, sometimes to the public, but usually internal to the organization or community that develops the software.

Is this software "Alpha code" or is it stable?

Thanks again.

Re: Simple SEO URL (OLD version) [support thread]

I will say that this is being used on more than 1000 shops, it is up to you to decide if it is stable or not.
Obviously I can't say that the software is 100% bug free (the only one I know that is 100% bug free is my "hello world" program which I wrote years ago :p)
Alpha is just the way I name it, doesnt mean it is not ready for use.

Is this software "Alpha code" or is it stable?Humm wonder about stupid ?
What you need to do is get you a test server and try it out to see if it is stable or not. If it runs OK it will be stable, if not come back here then ask stupid ? You will always be helped if it doesn't work I promise, but if you install it right no need to ask any ?.

I do understand.

ckosloff and yellow1912, thank you for your courtesy and concern for the community.

Clearly, I believe Simple SEO URL is a mod that may be a valuable enhancement to Zen-Cart. And, I won't be put off by the unfortunate (and I believe unrepresentative) reception my inquiries have yielded from certain participants.

Like all entrepreneurs, I wear many hats. Some I am more qualified to wear than others. Unfortunately, webmaster is not near the top of my list of competencies and I am on a very steep learning curve that a more sensible person might think wise to abandon. I minored in computer science in the 1970's and was a scientific (Fortran) programmer in the early 1980's. That was obviously a long time ago and I am not trained in modern languages nor environments. However, on the plus side, I have the discipline to carefully follow instructions, but am entirely dependent on the community.

I'm going to give it a try. I will no doubt be back to ask some "stupid" questions. Cheers and thanks again!

Re: Simple SEO URL (OLD version) [support thread]

Hi,

Sorry to change the subject here, but today I moved my site files to root instead of being within a folder called catalog.

Between me and my host we finally fixed everything to get the site working again, it did not go as smooth as it may have done to say the least.

I say everything all but part of simple seo and module manager, as I installed module manager because of installing simple seo, I feel the problems are related?

I have these error mesaages appearing, top of the page in admin, when in simple SEO manager -

Error: Nothing to do - no query or query-file specified.
Failed to set up version tracker table
/nsa4217PeR719271/includes/module_installation/yellow1912_ssu/current_version.txt is missing
Module version could not be found in file and database

and this in module manager

Error: Nothing to do - no query or query-file specified.
Failed to set up version tracker table

On the site the urls are still neat and all links seem to work fine still but the errors are not so good.

I have no idea how to fix this, I have re-uploaded all files relating to both, but nothing changed?

Please if you can help I would greatly appreciate it

Re: Simple SEO URL (OLD version) [support thread]

It keeps saying that I don't have permission to write to wamp\www\zencart\cache\seo directory ... I've messed with this for 6 hours now. I cannot afford to spend anymore time on it. It looks very promising for those that can get it to work.

I'll check the resources on here for alternatives that I can use.

I even tried making my own htaccess files and even added a new <directory "c:/wamp/www/zencart/cache/seo/" >
line t

I tried adding guests, everyone IIS_IUSRS to full permissions status in windows "security" tab.. nothing seems to work here..

this had no effect as part of httpd.conf either.
<Directory "c:/wamp/www/zencart/cache/seo/">
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>

I hear your frustration and disappointment. Unfortunately, I can not help you, but perhaps you can help me since you do seem to have gotten a bit farther than I have. I have not even been able to install the Module Manger that is a prerequisite for installing Simple SEO URL. Could you or any other kind soul here take a look at this link on the nearly abandoned Module Manager thread and make any suggestions on how to proceed? http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?p=763199#post763199

Best of luck to you. Please let us know how things work out for you.

Please forgive me, I really didn't mean any harm. Sorry for answering you like that. I Hope you can get it installed, up and running and if you need help please don't hesitate to ask.

I will try to help you if you will let me. Make sure you have the latest version of Module Manger rev16zip
If you have rename your admin folder for security reasons make sure the file structure in Module Manager matches what you have name yours. This might be the reason it is not showing up under tools in your store.
TROUBLESHOOTING:
After installing itself, this module writes a file named ".keep" in admin\includes\module_installation, if your server doesnt allow it to do so, it may make the module attempting to install itself everytime. The fix is easy though, just manually create a .keep file there (after the module has already installed itself, of course)
If you have anymore trouble let me know we will try something else.

Re: Simple SEO URL (OLD version) [support thread]

I cant say for sure, several reasons:

  1. perhaps the file permission current setting prevent it from being accessed?
  2. Perhaps something wrong with the file path?

In any case though, you can try to reupload both modules again. It wont break anything on the site. Make sure you get the latest versions.

If you need help with reuploading the files please read:
http://wiki.rubikintegration.com/zencart/modules/ssu/installation

Im sure you wont need any help tho.

PS: when you reupload files, make sure you do NOT reupload .htaccess file.

Re: Simple SEO URL (OLD version) [support thread]

I have already tried this, I re-uploaded all files, the only thing that I think could have messed it up was the change in location of my site files which as I said have been moved out of directory named catalog and placed directly into the root now , this was done to get rid of the need of a re-direct as this was causing duplication issues for my main page.

What files need to be looked at for these mods if they have lost their path?

What do I need to place in the htaccess file to ammend any problems, if anything?

What place is likely to cause permission access problems, the only thing is with this is that there have been no permission changes before of after the move?

Of course I will try again if its my only option, but the path is what I felt might have been wrong, but I don't understand what I would need to change to rectify this if it might be?

thanks
Paul

The reason was that your set DIR_FS_ADMIN in your admin/includes/configure.php completely wrong. Fixed that for you. You can configure SSU normally now.
