font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

OK, that has been taken care of now. I still see the symbols in the upper left corner in firefox though.

I removed any coding from the define main page and was able to show the fonts as the same for the center column. So that is one problem fixed. But, I have verdana font in the header, and placed the coding in the css for that to reflect that,
font: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 12px;
which is the font I want to use, yet, it isnt showing. Also, my background image is no longer showing. I am telling ya, I have looked at this too long!

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

PM me a phone number (if you want me to call you) and the log in info and I can look at during my lunch break which is in about 5 minutes. Other than that all I can keep doing is try and walk you through it while I continue to do my normal work.

obe1....sheep......you guys get this worked out? Looks like to me those little characters MIGHT be just a typo in includes/languages/English/index.php

It's worth a shot, anyway.

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

Obe1 has been oodles of help on my sanity! I am getting through it with both of your help. I did a compare with winmerge and the only differences in english/index.php is the following lines:

define('HEADING_TITLE', 'We feature authentic designer handbags, purses, diaper bags and accessories, from Fendi, Prada, Marc Jacobs, JP Tod's, Posh by Tori, Boujie Baby Couture, Timi & Leslie, and more.');
} elseif ($category_depth == 'nested') {
// This section deals with displaying a subcategory
/Replace this line with the headline you would like for your shop. For example: 'Welcome to My SHOP!'/
define('HEADING_TITLE', 'We feature authentic designer handbags, purses, diaper bags and accessories, from Fendi, Prada, Marc Jacobs, JP Tod's, Posh by Tori, Boujie Baby Couture, Timi & Leslie, and more.');
}

Is it perhaps the symbols in there? One other question I have.. is it possible that some of this is due to the html formatting at the top.. forgive me for not knowing the correct terminology.. but this line:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "<http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd>"> <html xmlns="<http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml>" dir="ltr" lang="en">

If it is that, where do I change it? I know sometimes it causes symbols to show if the formatting isnt correct.

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

In firefox I see this:

This is the main define statement for the page for english when no template defined file exists. It is located in: /includes/languages/english/index.php

**Yet I dont in IE? And I am unable to see any discrepancies when I use winmerge. **

I have to get ready for work, so, I wont be able to do much more til I return this evening.

I sent you the file and path I believe in a PM check your common/header.php file. That is where I think it is getting loaded from.

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

Obe1 I didnt get a file from you besides the CSS file you sent earlier today.
I checked the html_header file, as well as the tpl_header file, and both show no differences for me?

I see no reason why the background image disappeared yet it is still showing in the css file.

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

Ok, sheep, how'd work go? While you were working at your job, I was working 4 u......see, that's what we do in this forum. I re-created the exact same thing on my local server with a play-around install (just for problems like this)!
So to find out the solution for this and many other problems, just enter your credit card information on the next page...................:smile:

O.k.......Just joking. Go to: includes/templates/template_default/common/html_header.php and look around lines 20-23 (on mine). It should look like this:

?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" <?php echo HTML_PARAMS; ?>>
<head>

But, I bet yours looks like this:

?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" <?php echo HTML_PARAMS; ?>>
<head>

doesn't it? Notice those little in there just after the php tag?
Hope this solves the problem. It should as, like I said, I re-created the EXACT same issue on mine. Let us know.

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

Get Em Fast;

She gave me her login info and I found these three files all had the same problem.

includes/templates/luxury/common/tpl_header.php

includes/configure.php

includes/languages/english/header.php

How it was these three that got trashed with those weird characters is beyond me, especially the configure.php

The error she is getting now, do you know why that is? I thought it may be because she changed templates or something by accident and didn't copy over some files or something. I know she is going to look at when she gets home.

Thanks again for all your help as well :D

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

OK, I am home from work now, it was very helpful to get away from this computer for a bit. I was ready to be very ill with everything.
But I am ready to tackle more now. I see that the strange symbols are gone, however, I still see the error in firefox where it doesnt show the side boxes, yet it shows properly in IE? Any suggestions on that?

What can I do?

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

Sheep. It might not solve ALL the problems, but I found a BIG one for you. It took about 2 hours of looking, searching, and trial & error, and then all of a sudden it just POPPED OUT!!!!

In you stylesheet.......you are missing one little / Yep, just one little slash!

It should be the VERY FIRST character in your stylesheet. I would guess it got deleted when the got deleted.

Hope this helps saves SOME of you hair. :smile:

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

OMG! I think we are getting somewhere. I could not have done this without you two!! I dont know how to thank you.
I fear I have gone and made a mess up of what Obe1 had done for me. I now have symbols again. It is somewhere in the header template... along with the zencart logo showing.. otherwise, it is all done!

If you would be available, can you help me find where the darn symbols are? I see them in firefox, and searched the code through firefox, but I can not find it in the file.

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

One more thing you might try. Go to Admin/Tools/Developers Tool kit and type.....ahhh.... who am I kidding.....copy and paste those funny little varmints in the bottom field (be sure to include all files in the search) and see if that might locate the file that contains 'em.

Going to bed. I'll check back in in the morning.

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

developers tool kit came back with the following results:

Searching 647 files ... for:  /home/classylu/public_html/shop/includes/templates/luxury/common/tpl_header.php
Line #0 : <?php
/home/classylu/public_html/shop/includes/templates/luxury/template_info.php
Line #0 : <?php
Match Lines found: 2

BUT I still do not see it in my files for either one. Where is Line #0 anyway?

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

Has been fix (again). This time please download the following file to your computer to see where the mistake was.

**/home/classylu/public_html/shop/includes/templates/luxury/common/tpl_header.orig

compare it to the tpl_header.php that is there and look at the VERY first line between the two. Can't miss the problem.

That will help you understand where the mistake was. I do not see any more weird characters (at least on the main page) you may want to check your other pages at random.

Good Catch!!! I was too tired myself last night when trying to code as well.

Y'all have a good one, and I'll keep watching if there are any more problems.

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

O.k. Sheep, looking good. I only see one more thing that needs done.............in order to get your page on the left side and show the straps on the background image, you need to find this line in your css:

#mainWrapper {
    background-color: #ffffff;
    text-align: left;
    width: 850px;
    vertical-align: top;
    border: 0px solid #9a9a9a;
    }

and add:

float: left;

to make that whole section look like:

#mainWrapper {
    background-color: #ffffff;
    text-align: left;
    width: 850px;
    vertical-align: top;
    border: 0px solid #9a9a9a;
    float: left;
    }

Hope this helps.

obe1, thanks for the roses. But I was glad to be of assistance on this one.............what a learning experience!

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

I know I have said it before, but I will say it again. I truly thank you both for your help. You both have gone above and beyond with your help. I dont know how else to thank you! Obe1, your assistance was greatly appreciated.
you mentioned yesterday that the overrides system that I had set up for luxury were improperly set up. I will look into that to see what I have done wrong. AFTER I MAKE A BACKUP!

But I wanted to ask, if you both could tell me where I could find more help with CSS in learning. I have gone to w3schools online, but its not really structured in a way that I would understand it. I need like step1, step2 etc.

Again, I humbly thank you both!! If there is ever anything I can do for you, please dont hesitate.

Re: font size variation in firefox and IE, Im stuck?

CountingSheep;

Here is on good spot:

http://xhtml.com/en/css/reference/

And you have to remember one thing, designing GOOD css is an art, just like the designers of Zen Cart did. It is not just a one time thing, and the only way you learn is by doing and studying different coding examples. CSS is not really learned like html or even php, but a different coding beast in and of itself to tame. The main thing is to have patience, and if you are not understanding it, take a break and come back to it but a little slower. With time and pressing on you will get it. There is a A LOT to learn about Zen Cart and how it is all tied together from the database side all the way to changing something simple like a header.

I have received payment enough by being able to help and participate in the community as well as learn some things from Get Em Fast. I am going to removed myself from the thread now that it has been solved, but you have my screen name and you can always PM me and I will do what I can or see what thread you have started to help.

The only other thing I ask for payment is that if you are a praying person, that my wife will not have any more brain surgeries this year. She has had 8 since last September.

Blessings...
