TaxCloud Addon

I'm about to try this module but I have some questions.

1. We are required to charge tax on shipping. Does TaxCloud handle this itself, or just use the settings on the shipping config page?

Here are some answers to your questions:

1. TaxCloud handles shipping taxes automatically.

2. What happens currently when you apply a coupon is that the order subtotal changes but the tax calculated by TaxCloud is not recalculated. So the customer's total would not add up correctly and they would be charged for an incorrect tax amount. Coupons don't cause a problem with the TaxCloud service itself. Refunding the customer the difference would work. Support for coupons should be available soon.

3. TaxCloud requires a tax rate to be set for each product (this is how Zen Cart works as well). This can be done manually through the admin interface or through a database update. How difficult this is depends on how many different types of products you have. If you only sell one category of product you can just set a default for the entire store. Please let me know if you would like some help with this.

OK. I have it installed in zc 1.3.9h. I verified my site in TaxCloud.net and got the API keys. When I click update on the TaxCloud settings page I get this error:

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/.../admin/taxcloud.php:28) in /home/.../admin/includes/functions/general.php on line 21

We don't have a USPS_ID as far as I know. What is that? Is it required?

Hello Tapper,

Usually if you see this type of error it means that there are extra spaces in the PHP file at the beginning or end of the file. There shouldn't be any spaces before the opening "<?php" statement or after the closing "?>" at the end of the file.

Please check taxcloud.php. It could also be a problem with includes/modules/TaxCloud/taxCloudConfig.php.

USPS_ID is required if you want to do address verifications, but leaving it out wouldn't cause this problem. We do address verifications to get the 9-digit zip code. This allows us to return the most accurate tax calculation.

Please let me know if this doesn't clear up your problems.

OK, I tried it on a different website and it looks completely different. So there's something wrong with that other site.

So, we already had a tax rate and class set up. The class is plain old "Taxable Goods", and all of our products are set to that. The ID is 1. Does that all count as the TIC ID etc?

Lastly, it doesn't like something about our address. A big red box is across the top of the checkout screens that says:

Our location is a bit odd: physically we're in one town, but our area is assigned to the PO in the next town. So our street address / zip probably don't match.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what you mean by the "other site", so I won't go into that. :smile:

You will have to either create a new Tax Class, or edit your existing Tax Class to include the TIC ID. Editing your existing Tax Class would probably be easier.

The "Tax Class Title" needs to be set to the TIC ID. The "Description" can be set to whatever you like. A list of TIC IDs can be found at TaxCloud.net/tic.

It looks like the code is expecting a valid USPS ID. You can get your own ID for free. Let me know if you need help with that. How to do that is also detailed in the developer guide.

Let me know if this doesn't clear up your problems.

Tapper, I believe you have already figured this out but I will reply for others that may have the same question.

The basic process is that you install the USPS Shipping Assistant software. This can be found at http://www.usps.com/shippingassistant.

After the USPS Shipping Assistant has been installed and registered, the UserID can be found in the “About” box, in parentheses to the right of the name of the registered user.

I have everything all setup. The site is running FEC COWA (NUMINIX), and 1.3.9.

FEC simply combines the checkout modules into a one page format. I can checkout with both FEC enabled and not.

FEC enabled no tax shows at all... Now since the TaxCloud hasn't a proper order total module in the admin I am unsure of how it calls and from where to add it.

With regular Zen Cart checkout I get tax no problem and upon confirming order I get...


Array ( [0] => A matching lookup could not be found for this authorization )


Any ideas? For Washington this is really necessary.

We have had merchants report that COWA does not work with TaxCloud since it replaces some of the checkout code that TaxCloud relies on.

Currently in your cart it isn't making the call to compute the taxes, but it is making the call to commit the order. This is why you are getting the error message you are seeing.

It may be possible to get the two modules working together but it will take some coding changes. I can try to see if there is a simple fix for this. I will give it a try and let you know.

Hi, I was able to get this combination working by merging /includes/classes/order.php. Both of the add-ons modify this file.

I installed this (1.5) tonight per the instructions, but when I log back into the admin secant there isn't a tax cloud section under the locations / taxes tab. I reuploaded all ( and yes I uploaded the admin folder contents to the renamed admin folder). Does anyone have any tips?

Does anything show up under the Modules/orders total screen? You should see "Discount Coupon" and "Exemption Certificates" listed with aqn entry in the next colomn startting with ot_TaxCloud

You may want to check to ensure that the files truly were loaded. If somehow a file was not properly loaded the first time, and the the file was in read-only mode, it may not have been re-written the second time.

If that doesn't work, I would back up your site, VERY CAREFULLY remove the files that were installed and do a fresh install.

Any other ideas out there?

One other idea. (This one had me baffeled for a while) If you are on a linux server, directory names are case-sensitive. Make sure you didn't use the wrong name for your renamed admin folder by using the wrong case.

I am just testing out Tax Cloud. Using a test site for ZC 1.5, I tried the tax exemption option. After adding the info I selected "save" exemption and went to a white screen that just said "valid", and then stopped. When I hit the back button to my cart and refreshed, the tax was still there.

I think I figured it out - It doesn't work when the site is down for maintenance. Is that the answer? It is working now.

Using ZenCart 1.5 (installed via FTP and zc_install) with only the USPS shipping option added and installed. I'm trying to use TaxCloud but having a problem where the tax amount is not being added to the total sent for payment (using Authorize.net AIM for payment). For example, an order with subtotal of $10 shows the correct tax amount of $0.72 and correct order total of $10.72 on the checkout payment information screen but the "x_amount" value being sent to the payment server is 10.00.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks!

I've installed TaxCloud on a 1.5.0 Zen-Cart store, but no tax rates show up at checkout. I can't figure out what I'm missing. I've done everything in the readme. Any suggestions?

Make sure you have curl and soap enabled.

Also, in the TaxCloud admin screen, you should see:

In your Tax Cloud account, did you choose your state to collect taxes in?

I made an account on tax cloud.net my business is in NY. I added teh tax cloud files to zen cart. I added the:
TaxCloud API ID: Added
TaxCloud API Key: Added
USPS_ID:
Store Street Address: Added my address
Store Zip Code: Added my zip code
TaxCloud Enabled: true

When an order is made, Tax lookup shows 0.00
What could I be doing wrong, and is there any videos that show setting up Tax Cloud and what the outcome should look like.

Did you install the USPS software and enter in the right USPS_ID?

I think that is what happened to me when I first installed it.

I am asking the customer if they can get the ID, if they have no idea where it is where do I find and and what software is needed, or is it just on the website after you log in

You need to register to use the USPS APIs:

You will then have to request that the switch from the testing url to production.

Then download the click and ship software, once installed, in the upper right? hand corner is your USPS ID.

The customer did not have an account, they only bring the items to USPS. I signed up for an account at the location. I then installed the program, which it then asked me to create another account [used the same info from both the website and program]. After the program loads I do not see this USPS ID. And where do I request to swithc from testing to prodution?

I added what I believe is the ID found in the about page.
1- How do I know that the ID is correct and working?
2- Currently it still does not show tax

I got a 500 error when SOAP was missing, but I believe CURL is required as well.

I think that has to do with the webservice calls to USPS (the API link in my previous post).

I had to get over on the production site vs 'test' for things to work, but I could be mistaken.

How do I contact them to change from testing to real, USPS to me seems very confusing

Hello, there is a fix for this in the latest version of the TaxCloud module. What is happening is that the customer's shipping address now has the full state name, rather than the two-digit state code. The fix looks up the two-digit state code from the state name.

The module can be downloaded from here.

The updated file is /includes/modules/TaxCloud/func.taxcloud.php.

Usually the hosting server's admin panel contains a page which lists PHP information. This should contain a list of modules, such as SOAP. It should also list the version of PHP the server is running, which should be at least 5.3.

I had tax cloud all setup, and it has been working last week. The only new stuff is I have added inventory. I just went to test the check out process today and see the Tax lookup : shows 0.00 What could have gone wrong. I have re uploaded the taxcloud files to make sure they were not damaged.

Going through everything, I noticed that when the user checks out I get "Tax lookup +" which I did not recall seeing before. If I manually add tax and turn off taxcloud it works

Any advise would be appriciated.

I have brought back all the code all the way from 9/1 which I know was 100% working.
If something happened with the USPS link could this have cause my issue. I when I tried settings up USPS orginally I created 2 accounts one when going to the website, and second one when I ran the desktop program.

Just in case anyone runs into the same problem I did, here's a fix for it (courtesy of RCwebdev).
Using ZC 1.5.1 and TC 1.5.2b (released in Feb 2013), I was getting error logs with the following errors:

PHP Warning: require_once(includes/modules/TaxCloud/func.taxcloud.php) [<a href='function.require-once'>function.require-once</a>]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /SITE/includes/classes/order.php on line 21
PHP Fatal error: require_once() [<a href='function.require'>function.require</a>]: Failed opening required 'includes/modules/TaxCloud/func.taxcloud.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php5') in /SITE/includes/classes/order.php on line 21

The TC plugin itself appeared to be working fine, but it disabled the use of another plugin (in my case Edit Orders 4.1, although it may have affected other plugins, as well).

The quoted line 21 was originally:
require_once DIR_WS_MODULES . 'TaxCloud/func.taxcloud.php';

Based on RCwebdev's post regarding errors involving general.php (in an earlier version of TaxCloud, solved in 1.5.2b), I changed that line to:
require_once(DIR_FS_CATALOG . DIR_WS_MODULES . 'TaxCloud/func.taxcloud.php');
and this change solved the problem - the error logs stopped, and the other plugin is now working great, as well.

It turns out I was using an older version of TaxCloud that I downloaded from http://dev.taxcloud.net/ This version did not have all Zen Cart 1.5.1 changes

Hi - TaxCloud usually works beautifully, but I have run into a problem when sales tax doesn't get calculated and added when it should. We're in North Carolina, and all except 1 of our NC customers get charged tax correctly. The one lucky person who doesn't get charged sales tax lives in zip code 27712 (Durham county) and should pay 7.5%, he was spared this both times he placed an order (I bet *he* has no complaints about that...). How can this be fixed for future orders?

So I download the newest version then chucked it because I still have 1.3.9h running and that is what works best for my business. So I downloaded the most recent version for 1.3.9h as suggested and when I FTP all the files into my root it wipes everything completely out. So I chucked that store and pulled up my back up #2 same result. I see that some are using the latest version with their 1.3.9h and it is working fine. My head is starting to hurt and I need to go to bed but I am getting frustrated there are some files that I am being asked to overwrite and I do because the newer files have a larger volume what could I be doing wrong? I am going to try using the new version once before I go to bed. Please help.

Hi Sammirah,

Because you are using the older version of Zen Cart, we would recommend using the older version of the TaxCloud module.

If you have other modules already installed, you should be very cautious about simply overwriting the existing files because those previously installed modules may also have overwritten or modified the standard Zen Cart distribution files. If this is the case, you may need to compare and merge the TaxCloud distribution files with your existing files to get everything to work correctly.

In a somewhat related issue to some of the earlier posts, when I turn on the TC Coupon Administration module and turn off the default zencart coupon administration module, the menu item for coupon administration disappears. If I leave them both on, it remains. Can I leave both on? Does it cause a conflict. Is there a preferred order?

I am new to ZenCart and had hoped not to need to learn to code too much. So I now have the fresh install of ZenCart V1.5.2 (beta). I used ZenCart 1.5.2 instead of 1.5.1 because my host uses php 5.4 which ZC 1.5.2 was compatible with and ZC 1.5.1 was not. The install went well (the second time around since I made goofs along the way and wiped it all clean to start over). I have most of the stuff set up and am ready to start worrying about taxes and shipping.

I like that TaxCloud is supposed to make things easier overall so I started the install of the latest version of TaxCloud downloaded from the ZenCart Site. After I copy all the files to my site I went to check to see if things still work so far. The store it self appears to be working (although I don't have anything in it yet so its hard to tell). But the Admin area is broken. When I try to go to my admin page I get an HTTP 500 Internal Server Error. No login is shown just the error page. When I check my logs I am shown the following in a log file

PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function zen_get_ip_address() in /home3/bggearco/public_html/store/ADMINFOLDER/includes/init_includes/init_sessions.php on line 34

I have noticed with some playing around that when I get rid of the file
/public_html/store/ADMINFLODER/includes/functions/general.php
And put the original general.php file back in my admin area works again.
Hope this points someone in the right direction to figuring this out.

I have used WinMerge to compare the two files butthere are a LOT of differences so I am afraid to mess with it for fear of screwing up.

I have looked over a few threads but can not find anyone with my specific problem. I have looked at the code suggested on a few of the threads but it seems that the posts are older than the latest release of TC. I don't want to go messing with too much before I see if someone can direct me in the right direction.

Can anyone tell me how to go about getting TC to work with my ZC 1.5.2 install? I am fearful I will need to do a lot of code tweaks to get this working. If that is the case it makes me wonder how hard it will be to upgrade to the next version of TC or ZC when they become available...... will I have to fix a bunch of stuff again just to move to the latest release?

Any help would be appreciated.

I found the function -- function zen_get_ip_address() -- in the original general.php file but NOT in the TC version of the general.php file.

Should I just copy paste this function over to the TC version of the general.php file to get things working?

While comparing the two files (original general.php and the TC version of the general.php) I have found there seems to be a LOT of differences between the two. Most of the changes are things actually MISSING in the TC version of the general.php file. Should I copy all the stuff from the original file over to the TC file? Seems like a crazy thought but asking never hurts.

I could use some guidance from someone who knows how this all works

I'm having the exact problem and would be very interested in a reply from a programmer...

I've read in several forums that this mod can be installed on Zen Cart on a local server for testing. I have had no luck with 3 installations. Every time I install the Tax Cloud mod, I lose the admin area. It is blank and will not load the login page.

I have:

- PHP 5.5.12
- curl and soap enabled
- Zen Cart 1.5.3
- no other mods installed to possibly interfere

and I have also copied the admin files to MY_ADMIN_FOLDER

I've compared the core overwrites and the general.php is way over my head as well...

Are TaxCloud people monitoring this thread? The merges for 1.5.4 need to be done. I can submit a PR if it will be reviewed and merged. Let me know.

Has this been officially updated for 1.5.4? The download here on Zen-Cart.com still says 1.5.1. I downloaded the latest zip file from GitHub, but when installing it locally for testing it gave me nothing but a blank page for my Admin.

Please post the logs that were created in the logs folder for this error.

It also appears that the admin/includes/functions/general.php file from TaxCloud is missing a lot of the zen_record_admin_activity statements that were added for PCI Compliance in 1.5.4. If someone just overwrites the file with the TaxCloud one they will be removing that.

Automated Compliance - I just spoke to TaxCloud. They are pushing turning on Automated Compliance. If you turn on automated compliance, they will calculate and add to your invoices sales tax from 24 states, even if you only have a nexus in 1 state! The alternative is to turn off Automated compliance. With AC off, they will only calculate sales tax from states where you have a nexus, but then they will charge you $10/mo. Personally, I am a small enough business that neither option can work for me. If I cannot find an practical way to collect sales tax, I may go out of business.

It sounds harsh, but it's true. You're wasting your time, and likely short-changing your family. If you're that broke, get a second job - at minimum wage if necessary - and spend the rest of your time building marketable skills so you can make more money working for someone else. Running your own business is expensive and difficult, and if you're that cost-sensitive you have no hope.

Don't understand the hardship that neither option can work. If cost is an issue, just turn on Automated Compliance and use TaxCloud for free - and TaxCloud handles all compliance tasks (for the 24 states). :smile:

This is incorrect. FEC/FEAC/OPRC are all compatible with TaxCloud. The issue is the core edits that tax cloud makes to the order.php class file contain a condition which checks the page and only lists default Zen Cart pages. Pages like FILENAME_CHECKOUT, FILENAME_QUICK_CHECKOUT, and FILENAME_ONE_PAGE_CHECKOUT would all need to be added as well. A version with bug fixes was forked by Numinix and can be found here: https://github.com/numinix/TaxCloud (note: TaxCloud released a new version after our fork but doesn't look like they've implemented all/any of our fixes so you may need to merge the two versions).

There's a bug in Taxcloud's authorizenet_aim integration. Replace lines 391-398 in includes/modules/payment/authorizenet_aim.php with

Any chance there's an updated version of this that supports 1.5.5a? After copying the files over my installation I just get a blank page when a browse to the admin portal :(

I use Taxcloud with the automated compliance, and I am like you very small. It allows me to forego the $10 charge and keeps me compliant with the other states only as needed. So far I haven't had to pay any fees for other states as most of my customers seem to be here in my own state. So this will not put you out of business but it can actually help you stay on top of tax filings in your primary state. I for one forget to file on time so I find it more of a help than a hinderance.

I recently used the updated file a few days ago, and although the cart works fine, my admin area became inaccessible. I tried using win merge myself but that did not work or I did not merge properly. Need help, using zc1.5.5

After I installed this add-on, my admin area would not work so I uploaded a back up copy of the original: admin/includes/functions/general.php
You can try this, just be sure to download a copy of your current working file to your computer before updating.

Using 1.5.4 zen cart and the latest taxcloud edition - I'm getting the error message at checkout:

A matching lookup could not be found for this authorization

I saw that sammirah had that problem in another thread before he upgraded taxcloud. This is a cart that was using taxcloud before but the files are all new - no leftovers from the old version.

I saw in a really old post that the message used to mean that COWOA wasn't playing nicely with taxcould and I do have that installed but not turned on and I uploaded the class/order.php from TaxCloud for the front end of the site which was the only file the two had in common.

Zen Cart 1.5.5 TaxCloud breaks the admin pages. The <SITE>/admin<xxx>/includes/functions/general.php file is using an OLD VERSION which doesn't include the is__writeable function and BREAKS the admin pages completely.

I sure wish tax cloud would respond to something. I called them earlier today about the error I'm getting. No one answered but said the mailbox was full. Cart owner was able to leave a message later but no one has called back. Got to fix the error:

No matter what I've tried, I cannot get this to work on a 1.5.4 installation. I get an error message and have not been able to get either a response here or from taxcloud. If there is anyone who might have an idea what this is about, I would be grateful for an answer.

I am using ZenCart 1.5.4 and TaxCloud 1.6.2 with update 01/10/16. I have spoken with Dave @TaxCloud and he suggests I post here.
I have add-ons Order_total module: Priority Handling v.1.2.1 & Numinix Optional/Required Shipping Insurance. I need to charge taxes on these amounts.
TaxCloud says to send the amounts and the tax class (set up in the mod).
Question is: How do I get the Handling fee and the Shipping Insurance amounts passed to TaxCloud?
I don’t do PHP very well (hardly at all) so I don’t know where the amounts are stored. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend that the order.php file be removed from this package and instead have the file modifications mentioned in the installation instructions.

OK guys, I have an issue with my installation. 1.5.5f (upgraded from 1.5.5e original install) on an Apache server. I am using the taxcloud plugin as I'm participating in the Streamlined Sales Tax Initiative. When using the TaxCloud plugin, when someone checks out, they are presented with the order total, which shows product price, shipping, and tax properly. However, when their card gets charged, the tax amount isn't being collected. I've tried this with several payment processors so I'm certain it doesn't have to do with them. I think it's the way TaxCloud is passing the correct amount to the payment gateway but that's just a guess on my part.

I am running two different stores, both of which are on 1.5.5f and both are experiencing this issue. One of the stores was formerly on an older version, 1.3.somethingorother, and the taxcloud plugin for that version worked properly.

One current site is running PHP 7.1, and the other is running 5.6.3. Both are using MySQL 5.5.5-10.1.31-MariaDB.

Any thoughts on getting this to work right would be appreciated. If I had a clue about PHP I'd probably have this fixed but I'm no programmer and code mystifies me.

Any ideas on what the fix would be?

I've installed this into ZC 1.5.5f with the ZCA Bootstrap template. The catalog page taxcloud_exemptions does not load properly. It looks like a jquery conflict - something I'm not good at troubleshooting. Switching the template to Responsive Classic does not solve the issue.

taxcloud is referencing jquery 1.4.4, Responsive Classic template is referencing 1.12.4 and ZCA Bootstrap template is referencing 2.1.1.

Any help/hints is very much appreciated.
