Media Manager will not upload mp3 files

I have version 1.3.9h installed and am trying to upload some mp3's in media manager. I have set my media directory to 777, have increased my max upload on my server to 12 meg in php.ini, increased the max upload in zen cart admin to 12 meg and cannot get the files to upload.

I would also like to know how to add media directories. I see numerous posts on selecting alternate media directories from the pick box, and cannot for the life of me see where I can add media directories.

Okay, so what does that actually look like?
Does your internet connection die?
Does your computer blow up?
Does the file upload button do nothing when you click it?
Does the file upload happen but you get an error message?

Use your FTP program and create the folders yourself. Then they'll show up in the list.

What it looks like is this: I select the media collection, click edit and then browse to the mp3 file, select it and click add. The screen goes back to the media manager screen, and the collection still shows no linked clips. I did create a sub-directory under my media folder using ftp and it did not show up. I also noticed that when I click the version link in the admin site, it shows PHP uploads on, but max size is 2m. I change the /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini file to read
upload_max_filesize = 12MB
post_max_size = 12MB
so I don't know where the Max Size:2m is coming from.

OOOh. I lied to you about the sub-directory. It shows up now. The rest of the stuff is the truth as well as I know it.

I also found a small mp3 file and uploaded it as a test, and it worked. So it is the php upload max that's causing the problem, I guess.

Here we go again! I added a phpinfo file to my website, ran it and found out that it was looking at /etc/php5/cgi/php.ini instead of /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini and I changed that one. The version info now shows 12m on the max file size, but I still am not able to upload a 4.5m mp3 file. I know I'm getting closer, but still so far.

Success!!!!!!! When I created the sub-directories, they defaulted to 755. I changed them to 777 and the upload worked!!!!! Thanks!!!
