Why was alt_nav.php removed?

A rather good reason to keep it is that the configuration section in particular can get extremely long with the addition of 3rd party modules and scrolling a dropdown can sometimes be very tricky - if not impossible when they extend below the browser window.

I'll second this reasoning; one of my sites has a bunch of add-ons and I have to go through alt_nav to see/control those that were added last to "Configuration".

I hear a whisper that the alt nav may be undergoing some tweaking so that it's less irritating if you don't want it but trigger it accidentally and more useful if you do want it and trigger it intentionally.

I did not have a problem Dr. byte, I just see the need for it in some cases

This would now normally be handled using the new admin access capabilities that allow you to create profiles and assign them to users. So if you have admin users who shouldn't be touching the configuration settings, create a profile that excludes them and assign that profile to those users.
