Can't get XAMP 1.7.3 to run on Windows 7 32 bit

Ok, I've figured out the example.com 404 error (I had to reove the "#" from before the extra three lines added to the bottom, ie 127.0.0.1 www.myexample.com etc). I'm still having problems with the mail server however. I've installed Xampp 1.7.3 on an XP PC and same problem there. Any ideas ?

I have installed xampp on windows 7 also the mail server is an optional feature for your demo site you can run this without the mail server and simply customize it when you upload your actual site.

Well, yes I realise the mail server is not absolutely necessary but it would have been nice to test sending emails before launching the site. Do you also get the message saying that a programme (which turns out to be Mercury) is attempting to send a message ? How do get rid of it ?
