Ultimate SEO URLs

Hi,
Anybody know to achieve this -
domainname.com/category/product. I saw this on one of the zencart website -

"https://pens-n-crafts.com/fountain-pens-c-4/black-titanium-elgrande-fountain-pen-amboyna-burl-p-74"

Currently my site is just showing -
domainname.com/category
domainname.com/product

I want to achieve domainname.com/category/product

Can somebody help?

Hello - I just installed Ultimate SEO URLs files and the .htaccess file to my root directory. So... then what!? I don't see anything different happening. Is there a configuration screen at this point? The readme file is too brief in my opinion - only sparse info is given to explain what to do after installation!

Hi ~Melanie, thanks for the fast reply! Of course, as soon as I posted a plea for help I discovered that I had missed copying a file. After moving the last file into place: "\includes\html_output.php", everything worked as it should have all along.

Evidently that file has all the power of the entire mod behind it since without it, the site wasn't broken and with it, the new URLs work as hoped for.

I know the mod is rather old, but it would sure be nice if there was more info about it, esp. troubleshooting tips!

It's always good to look at the last update of any module/software before you start using it. In the software world, a too old software is rather dangerous to use :)

Absolutely - and I weighed that option very heavily. The other options out there are just so heavy (too many files!) to install on an existing Zen Cart in my opinion. I was concerned about merging so many files into existing Zen Cart files I had modified.

Im pretty interested in this "heavy" thing, are you mentioning the amount of files the package(s) may include? Or are you talking about the amount of files you have to either merge/edit?

Also, given that all the packages are not the same (we have several seo packages offering different features, and along with the features come a larger amount of codes/files), and that an older version of this module does not use caching well, which will put a hefty performance penalty on large sites, how do those factors play a role if any in your decision?

Just being curious (since im taking some sale course here, and I want to know more about what the "customers" think)

but some problems have emerged. In content it is OK. But the address bar is displayed in this way.

Does anyone know if this will be updated to use in current versions and also, is this mod what I need. I am looking for a way to have search engine friendly urls for my product pages.

I was told by a gentleman who does SEO work that each page should have a search engine friendly url instead of the urls we get; example: http://www.knotnbauble.com/Zen/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4&products_id=421

he said they usually create a "widget" of code to make each page come up with what the page is about, but this would cost me thousands of dollars to have them do and I don't know about anyone else, but I don't have that kind of money lying around, so I just wondered if there is something here in the mods that will do what they suggest.

Any feedback would be so helpful. Thanks all!

There are two other modules you can look into

1. Simple Seo Url
2. Ceon Mapping seo

They both perform the same tasks, though the features are a bit different. Both will help you to do what you want though.

I would recommend against Ultimate Seo Url, since this module has been abandoned by its author for a very long while.

Thanks for the fast response. I had read that the Ultimate was abandoned...too bad as it seems to be a good cause. Perhaps one of you wizards will pick up where the other left off some time soon.

Both the 2 modules I listed above already provide way far more features than this Ultimate Module does.

The truth of the matter is that there is a VERY SMALL SEO advantage to rewriting urls. This used to be a much greater advantage when search engines had difficulty understanding the dynamic parameters.

Spend some time poking around SEO blogs and ask in some SEO forums... One opinion on the matter is not significant enough.

We have stopped recommending url rewriting for existing store and only really offer it for brand new unindexed stores....

Customers still choose to have them installed, and the indexed stores with them are kinda stuck with them as even with the proper redirection there is a rank hit for changed pages urls.

Correct!
Some still insist on using so called "seo" urls, however. One good argument would be "user friendly" instead of "search engine friendly". But do the normal users really look at the links? doubt that.
But then again, I still use it on my own sites since it just looks nice and the links make more sense for me.

I have been using Ultimate SEO on version 1.3.7 for over a year and it has been working fine.

Recently it stopped working. When i click on a product i get the following error message

404 Not Found

The requested URL /hespanplastbag609-p-1530.html?zenid=e56c3407384801b7125710f76a21f109 does not exist.

http://zipdrugs.com/ /hespanplastbag609-p-1530.html?zenid=e56c3407384801b7125710f76a21f109 404

The URL in browser shows as
http://www.zipdrugs.com/hespanplastbag609-p-1530.html?zenid=e56c3407384801b7125710f76a21f109

I wonder if the space highlighted above has something to do with the error.

As soon as i turn off SEO site works fine.

More than likely something is wrong with the htaccess file, or mod_rewrite of apache.

Could someone explain to me how to install this thing. I downloaded the zip, unzipped it and read the "read me" file. The instructions seems simple, but I am scared to merge or copy and I am not real sure where to do that exactly.

If someone could explain this to me like I'm a two year old, that would be great!!!

If you have not installed it yet, consider the Simple SEO instead. It is far better supported.

I actually haven't installed it yet, but thanks for the advise. I'll do my homework.
