Ok the author emailed me with a quick reply and I wanted to pass along what he said!
Please go here:
https://bitbucket.org/pickupman/zencart-recaptcha/downloads
(And download - Merge revision for contact_us)
There is a merge revision he wrote that seems to have fixed the contact us error messages and all looks like it is working good now!
Otherwise to remove the configuration run http://site.com/admin/index.php?remove_recaptcha=yes and then delete admin/includes/function/extra_functions/recaptcha_functions.php
I am assuming that this will remove the Configuration->reCAPTCHA entry from your admin panel.
The above is not my words or instructions but the authors. I just wanted to be helpful by passing along the info as my shopping cart looks to be working well now.
Thanks to Joe McFrederick

Glad that fixed it, and thanks for posting the instructions.

I updated the (un)install routines for the module. This should make this more clear on how to (un)install this module. You can download the update at bitbucket. The only file change if you are using 1.2 (reCAPTCHA on several pages), is admin/includes/functions/extra_functions/recaptcha_functions.php. No other action needs to be taken.

Hey everyone,
I was going to install a CAPTCHA but in the end I set up a simpler and more visitor friendly solution : a CSS based hidden field, which if filled by a bot, triggers the end of the email script. See this thread for details :

Awesome! Thanks for the uninstall feature! (Not needed now as the Add on is working great! But nice to have if needed, in order to remove info from the database!)

Unfortunately, if bots know you are using zencart, then chances are they may automatically may be submitting the known fields. No solution is full proof. Requiring some random string would probably yield better results, that's were a CAPTCHA can be helpful. They have become pretty ubiquitous with web forms.

I have installed the original reCAPCHA mod v1.1 and all is working, except my entire store WAS on my SSL, it now shows the lock with a red line through it due to the reCAPTCHA not being secure....
Is there a way to fix this???
thx

I tried switching the keys to global, didn't work, cleared the cache as well. When you first load the store page all is well, but as soon as you click on contact us it breaks the secure page... :( not good

Ok just noticed it has broken the admin SSL as well...

SSL for an entire site seems like overkill, but either way in includes\templates\your_template_name\templates\tpl_contact_us_default.php find the line with:
recaptcha_get_html(CONTACT_US_RECAPTCHA_PUBLIC_KEY);
and try changing to:
recaptcha_get_html(CONTACT_US_RECAPTCHA_PUBLIC_KEY, null, true);

This shouldn't be affecting the admin page. If you view the source of the admin page, do you see a resource that does not start with https:. You generally find what item is loading via http. I wonder if another item is causing your problem like a image, css, or something.
Also you could try this in includes/classes/recaptcha_lib.php
if ($use_ssl) {
to
if ($_SERVER['SERVER_PORT'] == '443') {

This one fixed the issue! Thanks so much.
Yeah I know SSL on the entire store is overkill but we deal a lot with the 40-50+ crowd and they like that little green lock!
Also with the "interesting" company name we ten to get some unwanted attention from spammers, etc.
Thanks again,
mike

Hello, I installed the pickupman's recaptcha and it works just nice in the contact_us page... but in create account it doesn't even show... what can I do? My zencart version is 1.3.8a.
Thanks in advanced,
Luis.

Ok, I figured it out already. You have to create those records in the zen_configuration table. For instance if you want to enable the create account, you have to insert this:
INSERT INTO `cerca_zc1`.`zen_configuration` (
`configuration_id` ,
`configuration_title` ,
`configuration_key` ,
`configuration_value` ,
`configuration_description` ,
`configuration_group_id` ,
`sort_order` ,
`last_modified` ,
`date_added` ,
`use_function` ,
`set_function`
)
VALUES (
NULL , 'Enable Create Form', 'CREATE_ACCOUNT_RECAPTCHA_STATUS', 'true', 'Display reCAPTCHA text on create form (default: true)', '31', '0' , NULL , '0001-01-01 00:00:00', NULL , 'zen_cfg_select_option(array("true", "false"),'
);
The other configuration_key (that you have to create if you want to enable them) are:
CREATE_ACCOUNT_RECAPTCHA_STATUS
LOGIN_RECAPTCHA_STATUS
ADVANCED_SEARCH_RECAPTCHA_STATUS
PRODUCT_REVIEWS_WRITE_RECAPTCHA_STATUS
TELL_A_FRIEND_RECAPTCHA_STATUS
Cheers,
Luis.

I have posted a new update that may fix some of the bugs mentioned above.
Updates can be downloaded from:
https://bitbucket.org/pickupman/zencart-recaptcha
Release notes include notes about the changes. For some unknown reason the installation routine got deleted, and so some of the pages values were missing.
New Zenner
I have updated the login page to allow captcha to be shown on the login page with a non-split login page. A button when click will load the recaptcha code in the appropriate form. Clicking on either button will toggle the recaptcha between forms.
If you have either login page or create account set to false, the recaptcha will be displayed without any user interaction in the proper place.
Example: Enable Login = false Enable Create Account = true
Recaptcha will be displayed automatically at bottom of page
Example: Enable Login = true Enable Create Accout = true
Button will be displayed in both form, when clicked will load the recaptcha in that form. Clicking on the other form will remove the previous recaptcha and insert new one in other form
When split page is enabled, the recaptcha will be displayed automatically if enabled.

Hello
I download all files from Bitbucket "pickupman is sharing code with you" site, and uploaded the files to the relevent directories of my website (newly installed 1.5 with Red Passion template). However. now I can't get to the admin area (zcadmin). everytime I visit mysite.com/zcadmin, I get to the bitbucket - "pickupman is sharing code with you" page. What have I done wrong? please help.

Hi CP,
That's a really odd behaviour. There shouldn't be anything in the zip file to cause that kind of redirect.
Try downloading from:
https://bitbucket.org/pickupman/zencart-recaptcha/get/1.2.6.zip
This is the latest version. I do need to add an update for 1.5 the will auto register the admin configuration page.
Where did you get the original download (my blog/bitbucket)? And make sure there isn't some kind of line in your .htaccess file causing this.
The admin folder in the zip only contains a function to install the configuration group when you log in to your admin page.
