I changed hosts and haven't had issues since, but we also upgraded the cart. And my problems were with both PDF and zip files. It didn't matter which.

Zip file is always an issue, not only with zen, on an average of 10 zip files I download there will be at least 1 that has to be redownloaded.
Corrupted zip files are 99% of the time caused by what is called packet loss during the download process. This means that if your internet connection has even the slightest of hiccups during the download process, it will cause a millisecond disturbance to the data stream and your download will not be downloaded completely. So even if you get 99.999999% of the file, it still will not work.
I no longer provide installation support on forum for all my modules. However, if there are real bugs with the modules please feel free to contact me
Ok, it's been a week, and not a single customer support email has been sent to me regarding corrupt downloads. I have been closely monitoring the orders, and some customers do seem to have to download the product twice, but that seems to work ok for them since they aren't emailing me anymore with complaints.
I only changed the permission on my downloads folder and I have tried gaining access to my folder with a direct link and I was unable to get in. Which is very very good.
So, even being on SiteGround, I now have downloads that work, and I am just thrilled.
Those having the issues with the PDFs, do you have them in your download folder? Or in the Doc folder? I put everything in my download folder. And my PDFs when the download is clicked, it actually opens a new window and opens the PDF. Not sure if that is how its suppose to work, but I have never had a complaint from a customer on that one. LOL
Sofor all the great advice given here.
Thank you so much.
Ok.. the same problem is back. And this time it has cost me customer, not to mention hours emailing zip files to customers who say they can't open theirs due to it being corrupt.Sitegrounds answer to my problem... spend a minimum of $99 a month to have private space.
This is their exact answer to my asking for help in resolving this issue....
"I am truly sorry to read about the issues you have been experiencing with our servers. From I have read, it appears that the PHP script is either failing to execute in time, or the download is being terminated after a certain amount of time. The first issue might be caused by the fact that this is a shared server, and the system resources are being spread equally amongst all accounts on the same server. On peak hours when the resource consumption is higher, the PHP execution times become a bit larger, which may cause timeouts. Additionally, the bandwidth is being reduced by the usage of the other customers, which again can cause the incomplete downloads. My recommendation on this case is to consider upgrading to one of our Dedicated Solutions. These servers offer much more customization and you will be the only one, who will use the server system resources and bandwidth. You can find more information regarding our Dedicated Solutions on the following URL:

I can not afford an additional $99 a month, can anyone recommend a new server who has the capability of giving me reliable downloads for my customers? I have looked at Hostmonster and they do offer ZenCart, which is a big factor, but I can't find any reviews about how files download from them.
Any suggestions or help would be most welcomed. Siteground is causing me to lose $$ by having unhappy customers, and countless hours each week emailing files and putting out fires.
Thank you

For $99 a month and problems why don't you look into our Certified Hosting sites and discuss with them your needs and problems as see if one of them can't come up with a solution for the same or less money ...

Hi Everyone,
Just a quick reminder for everyone. I had the same problem for a week now until I realised that I forgot the most basic thing in regards to files.
Check that you upload your files in BINARY format. Do not assume that your FTP program does that automatically. I had changed my client to ASCII because of something that I was doing and forgot it and spend a week trying to fix the download corrupt problem going through every singly thread on the topic.
Then I realised it and did a clean upload in binary and problem solved immediately :-)
Just thought to remind everybody.
Regards,
Tassos

Thanks Jaycode for your post about changing the PUB to 777 - having now tried that my previously corrupt zip files are downloading perfectly! Many thanks!
I know nothing about the numbers but trust changing PUB from 0755 to 0777 will not cause any other issues whilst curing this one!
I have been reading and re-reading this thread and doing all of the above in hopes of curing my problem, but to no avail. The issue is that 90% of the pdf downloads I test will come through as corrupt and furthermore, when I zip the pdfs, the zip file downloads at 0mb (no information inside). I have set my Pub folder to 777 as well as my download folder, my pdf names are legal, I have tried streaming, and changing redirect AND streaming to false and still have corrupt pdfs. My question at this point is will a dedicated server help with this issue or if someone could explain in more detail how I would go about editing the php.ini file on my server (even though it is a shared server) to a setting that will not time out on download. Also, I am on a unix/linux server therefor, download by redirect should work, but each time I use this setting, I get a 404 forbidden message even with Pub set to 777???
Thanks in advance!
~Chris
